What are the responsibilities and job description for the Modified Corrections Officer position at City of North Las Vegas?

- Shift work required - This position supports an operation that is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. You must be able to work any shift (days, or graveyard), and any day of the week, to include weekends, holidays, and overtime. Currently, the schedule consists of 12-hour shifts and are divided into two squads with days off being Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday, or Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Each squad will alternate being off on Wednesdays.
- Must successfully complete probation - Successful Modified candidates will participate in an accelerated 3 week training/orientation program, in addition to a 12 week field training program.
- Pay Considerations – The starting hourly pay for this position is $32.09 (step 1). All new employees hired for this position will start at step 1 of the range. Existing employees will receive increases as outlined by their bargaining agreement.
- Working conditions - Work is performed indoors and outdoors in all types of weather within the secure perimeter of the Correctional Center, most of the time. Must be able to work in an environment subjected to sufficient noise and be able to shout in order to be heard above the ambient noise level. Must be able to function and work around unruly or physically disrupting individuals.
The Role
The Modified Correction Officer position is designed for officers who have completed an academy at their own expense or by sponsorship of an organization, which is certified by the State of Nevada Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST), AND who do not meet the requirements of Lateral Entry, but have attained a Category III Certificate, and are currently employed with a law enforcement agency. Applicants who are not employed by a law enforcement agency at the time of application must apply within one year of graduating from the academy or within one year of their last service date with a law enforcement agency.
A copy of the applicant’s current and valid Peace Officer Certification certificate MUST be scanned and attached to the on-line application.
- Must currently possess a Nevada Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) Category III certification*
- High school diploma or equivalent, minimum age of 21 at time of filing, U.S. Citizen, Character above reproach. Must be able to work in a security type environment and manage stressful and potentially dangerous/difficult inmate contact situations.
- Any combination of education, training, and experience which produces knowledge, skills and abilities required for the job and related to the essential functions of the position
- Must possess a valid state driver's license and maintain satisfactory motor vehicle record and ability to obtain appropriate Nevada state driver’s license within required time frame.
- Must be able to obtain appropriate POST CAT 3 Certification within established time period.
- Vertical Jump 15 inches.

- Push-Ups 20 (no time limit).
- 300 Meter Run 74 seconds.

- Any felony conviction.
- Any domestic violence conviction.
- Gross misdemeanor and misdemeanor convictions will be reviewed on a case by case basis.
- Although there have been recent changes to laws regarding the legal possession and consumption of marijuana, the City of North Las Vegas will continue to adhere to its professional standards and guidelines as it relates to recent and continuous use of the drug.
