Description

This position will assist Police Officers with the detection, collection, evaluation and preservation of crime scene evidence. The Crime Scene Technician is responsible for gathering, classifying, preserving and transporting varied forms of material substances by using technical laboratory equipment at the scene of homicides, robberies, burglaries and other criminal offenses committed throughout the city and other areas as required. Work involves photography, sketching, latent fingerprint detection, removal of explosives and the maintenance of evidence continuity, which is presented in courtroom prosecution. Duties require the use of technical law enforcement investigative skills and legal judgment in recognizing materials, which can significantly assist in solving crimes and prosecuting offenders. Contact with contaminated, corrosive or explosive materials may result from performing some assigned tasks. Work is reviewed and evaluated by a law enforcement superior.

  • Discovers and collects substances such as fibers, blood, vapors, trace evidence, and paint at a crime scene; prepares casts of tire, tool and shoe impressions.
  • Develops, lifts and photographs latent palm and fingerprint evidence; makes positive identification and prepares exhibit for case prosecution.
  • Performs specialized technical work gathering and documenting evidence at crime scenes.
  • Prepares written reports of crime scene investigation and submits findings to superior.
  • Performs forensic photography and produces crime scene sketches.
  • Detects, collects, preserves, packages and transports evidence.
  • Testifies in court on evidence gathered at crime scene, maintains continuity of evidence and produces necessary records.
  • Performs related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications

High school graduate or equivalent with documented proof of training or experience in the use of 35mm SLR photography. Additional required training includes familiarization with some of the basic concepts and practices of modern crime scene and or forensic photography techniques.

Must possess a valid Florida Driver's License.

Supplemental Information

Knowledge of the principles and practices of scientific criminal investigation

Knowledge of law enforcement practices and requirements for accurate evidence collection, identification, preservation and presentation.

Knowledge of the standard fingerprint identification, classification and preservation techniques.

Knowledge of the standard techniques of still and motion picture photography and development procedures.

Ability to skillfully perform investigative procedures in diversified assignment areas.

Ability to learn the legal, administrative and procedural regulations applicable to the various areas of assignment.

Ability to present court testimony clearly and concisely.

Ability to prepare accurate and complete reports of findings.

Skill in the operation of basic police laboratory, photographic and measuring equipment.

Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, using excellent English.

Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, sit, stand, hear, use hands to fingers, handle, feel or operate objects, read and write English.

Must be physically able to exert up to fifty pounds of force occasionally and / or up to fifty pounds of force frequently, and / or a negligible amount of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. Physical demands are in excess of sedentary work.

Work involves reaching, pulling, pushing, stooping, kneeling, crawling, crouching, and balancing, and standing for long periods of time.
