What are the responsibilities and job description for the Electrical Engineering Technician position at City of North Platte?
This employee will perform professional and technical engineering office and field work in the technical design, coordination, construction, and maintenance activities of the electric distribution system. This employee will inspect, document, approve, and finalize the installation of said systems and improvements. This employee will also coordinate and plan the daily operations of the load management system.
Essential Job Functions:
- Prepare preliminary and final design of electric construction and maintenance projects.
- Prepare electric work orders, field reports, and load calculations.
- Estimate project costs, prepare specifications, maps, documents, and purchase materials.
- Ensure proper permitting with state and local government agents.
- Negotiate and write legal documents for the acquisition of easements.
- Serve as the Chief of Survey Crew and state structures.
- Serve as project manager; coordinate and inspect major construction projects to ensure project specifications are met.
- Ensure compliance of the electric utility with local, state, and federal laws and regulations regarding safety and environmental issues.
- Prepare and sign annual federal environmental reports.
- Prepare the annual electric construction and maintenance budget in coordination with the Electric Superintendent.
- Purchase agent for transformers, substations, underground conductor, switch gear, and meters. Approve all purchases for numerous specifications.
- Program, install, operate, maintain, and trouble shoot electric mechanical substations, load management, and metering software and equipment.
- Confirm meter needs and billing.
- Determine customer rates as per engineered electric load/usage.
- Review blueprints of new commercial buildings to ensure they meet requirements and to determine the size of the electrical service and transformers.
- Represent and sign off for the electric utility through the planning and subdivision process variances and vacations of right of way and building plans.
- Verify and approve payment of monthly power bill from electric wholesaler.
- Prepare monthly power bill.
- Inspect field personnel and work with other electric utilities.
- All other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- High School diploma or GED, required.
- Proficient in Auto Cad and Microsoft Office Suite.
Preferred Talents:
- Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of electric engineering and mapping.
- Knowledge of drafting and mapping principles and techniques.
- Extensive knowledge of design and operation principles of electric transmission and distribution systems.
- Ability to perform complex mathematical calculations.
- Knowledge of the provisions and policies of the National Electric Code, the Power Review board, power suppliers, and regulatory agencies.
- Ability to perform technical design and layout work.
- Knowledge of the application of technical civil or electrical engineering and surveying principles to the problems of roads, streets, drains, sewers, power distribution, water and sewer utility installation, other buildings, and public works structures.
- Knowledge of and the ability to troubleshoot and customize engineering design software applications.
- Ability to supervise and check the work of office and field engineering, surveying, drafting, mapping, and electrical personnel.
- Ability to read and interpret plans and specifications.
- Ability to perform unofficial land and location surveys.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with property owners, contractors, suppliers, subordinates, personnel in other departments, and the public.
- Ability to establish and maintain favorable, cooperative, and effective working relationships and communication with employees, management, and the public.
