What are the responsibilities and job description for the Plant Maintenance Mechanic I position at City of North Port?
- Performs general preventive and corrective mechanical maintenance, troubleshooting, and general construction on all utility plants and lift station equipment.
- May operate heavy equipment including but not limited to man lifts, forklifts, overhead crane lifting operations and inspections.
- Lubrication of small and large diameter valves, actuators and bearings; rebuilding various pumps and valves; repairing and installing piping; repairing plant system equipment failures.
- Maintenance of manually, hydraulically, and electrically operated regulating valves, slide gates, various sizes and types of pumps, stationary and mobile overhead hoists and cranes, compressors and pneumatic systems, hydraulic power units, domestic water systems, and plant mechanical equipment.
- Assists in rebuilding, replacing, and installing pumps; refurbishing and/or rebuilding valves and associated piping.
- May perform rotating on call duties and after-hours emergency response.
- May remove and install large diameter pipeline fitting including but not limited to flanged and MJ.
- May perform plant inspections, safety-related inspections and maintenance and overhead crane lifting operations and inspections.
- Performs other related work as required.
- Maintains cleanliness of work area.

- Ability to troubleshoot and repair chemical metering pumps.
- Knowledge of maintenance and repair procedures for water and wastewater utilities system.
- Knowledge of the occupational hazards of the trade and of proper use of safety procedures.
- Knowledge of greasing and maintenance on equipment.
- Knowledge of proper repair of PVC piping.
- Knowledge of proper use of all hand tools and safety equipment; Ability to operate equipment in general plant and system maintenance.
- Ability to understand and carry out instructions and to complete work assignments correctly.
- Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods, often under hot and humid conditions.
- Ability to work a flexible work schedule, including call outs.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other City employees.
- Ability to test, detect malfunctions, calibrate and repair specialized equipment.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to respond in a professional manner to complaints or inquiries from a variety of sources.
- High School Degree or equivalent.
- Two (2) years of experience with operations, preventive and corrective maintenance, and repair of mechanical equipment and systems associated with water and wastewater treatment, conveyance and distribution systems.
- Some plumbing experience preferred
- Sheet metal and pipe fabrication experience desired.
(A comparable amount of training, education and/or experience may be substituted for the above qualifications.)
Licenses and Certifications:
Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver's License.
Emergency Response Responsibility
Every City employee has emergency response responsibilities, though not every position will require routine assignments during an emergency event. All employees are subject to recall around the clock for emergency response operations, which may require irregular work hours, work at locations other than the normal work location, and may include duties other than those specified in the employee's official job description. Assignments in support of emergency operations may be extensive in nature, with little advance notice, and may require employees to relocate to emergency sites with physically and operationally challenging conditions.
