We seek friendly and reliable Lifeguards to join our amazing Parks and Recreation Services team. As a Lifeguard, you'll have the chance to interact with the public daily while ensuring their safety and well-being. Responsibilities include observing swimmers, responding to potential hazards, providing emergency care, and enforcing regulations as a pool lifeguard.

If you're passionate about teaching, you might also be interested in the Instructor Guard position. And if you're a natural leader, you'll want to check out the Senior Lifeguard position, which involves providing instruction and direction to the team.

All applicants must be at least 16 years of age by March 29, 2025. Mandatory Training Dates : All selected applicants MUST be available to attend the following mandatory training dates before their first day of work :

  • May 9 (Friday) from 12pm - 8pm - Recreation Staff Training (All Recreation and Park Services staff must attend)
  • May 10 (Saturday) from 8am - 5pm - Recreation Staff Training (All Recreation and Park Services staff must attend)
  • June 6-8 (Friday through Sunday) from 8am - 5pm - Aquatics Staff Training (Supplemental training for Lifeguards, Instructor Guards, Senior Guards, and Recreation Leaders I and II under Aquatics)

Essential Duties

Essential duties include, but are not limited to, the following :

Monitors the use of the swimming pool; enforces safety rules.

Patrols the swimming pool and aquatics facility; keeps attentive lookout for accidents in the water or on a diving board or swimming pool deck; warns people against dangerous practices regarding pool use; enters water to rescue persons in distress; administers artificial respiration and first aid as needed.

Assists in implementing various aquatics competitions throughout the year.

Performs a variety of miscellaneous duties such as answering phone, running errands, picking up supplies needed for activities.

Qualification Guidelines

Knowledge of : life saving methods and the application of first aid; policies, rules and regulations governing the conduct and safety of persons using the pool; methods and practices of pool cleaning and maintenance.

Ability to : rescue distressed swimmers and administer artificial respiration and first aid; supervise conduct of pool patrons and maintain order in a tactful manner; effectively enforce safety and health regulations relating to aquatics program; use life lines, rings and other safety equipment; establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, participants, instructors, and the general public; communicate effectively orally; give and understand oral instructions.

Education and / or Experience

Any combination of education and / or experience that has provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary. Example combinations include :

Completion of American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Certificate.

Those applicants selected will be required to complete the Swimming Pre-Test successfully (be able to successfully demonstrate 300 yards continuous swim, using the front crawl and breaststroke, tread water for two minutes without using arms, able to retrieve a ten lb. weight from seven feet of water then swim 25 yards with legs only). Required Licenses and Certificates

Valid certificate in Lifesaving, valid certificate in First Aid.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to swim, walk, sit and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance.

The employee must occasionally lift and / or move over 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and / or humid conditions, toxic or caustic chemicals.

The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet while in the office, and moderately loud when in the field.

BENEFITS FOR HOURLY / AT-WILL / PART-TIME EMPLOYEES

Terms of Employment : All employees hired as Hourly / At-Will / Part-Time are employed "at-will" throughout the term of their employment with the City. Consequently, the services of a Hourly / At-Will / Part-Time employee can be discontinued at anytime without cause, regardless of the number of hours worked for the City by the employee.

Retirement : Membership in the Public Agency Retirement System (PARS) is required. The employee pays the 7.5% retirement contribution.

Credit Union : The City is affiliated with the Los Angles County F & A Federal Credit Union. Please check with the Department of Human Resources for details.

Employee Assistance Program : An Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is available to provide help to employees and members of their families who are experiencing personal problems. For more information, contact the Department of Human Resources.

Paid Holidays : After 3,000 hours of employment, an hourly employee is entitled to six hours pay for specified holidays designated in the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).

Vacation Leave : After 3,000 hours of employment, vacation leave is accumulated at the rate of .046 hours for each hour of straight time worked.

Sick Leave : Beginning on the 30th day of employment with the City, employee will accrue sick leave at the rate of .033 hours for each hour of straight time worked. No sick leave shall be taken until the 90th day of employment. After 3,000 hours of employment, sick leave is accumulated at the rate of .046 hours for each hour of straight time worked.

Medical Plan : Eligibility for medical coverage is determined using the Affordable Care Act guidelines. Employees may also qualify after 3,000 hours of employment.

Voluntary Insurance Plans : Optional Short Term Disability, Hospitalization, Accident and Cancer insurance policies are available at the employee's cost.
