The Norwalk Parks and Recreation Department is looking for people age 14 and older for seasonal part-time employment during the summer season. This position will be for umpiring youth baseball/softball games at McAninch Sports Complex. Applicants should be enthusiastic about sports and working with children as well. Previous umpiring experience and working with children is preferred, but not required. Rules for these programs will be provided. Hours of work vary from 5:30pm – 8:00pm, Monday through Thursday, depending on the amount of teams registered to play. Pay is $15 per game officiated. Umpires will be provided proper protective equipment and other umpiring tools. Umpires may wear comfortable athletic clothing with no alcohol, drug or offensive language as McAninch is a family friendly complex. Umpires must have their own transportation to and from the athletic fields.All offers of employment are conditioned upon successfully passing a background check and drug screening.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe umpire will arrive fifteen (15) minutes prior to the scheduled game start.Must check in with the Facility Supervisor in the Equipment Room prior to heading to the field.Demonstrate the ability to officiate youth baseball/softball games, while showing sufficient knowledge of rules and mechanics.Communicating with coaches and players while reviewing basic rules.Remaining unbiased while umpiring games, avoiding verbal confrontations with spectators.The umpire will approach his/her position as a representative of Norwalk Parks and Recreation, displaying respect for the facility, participants, parents and co-workers. Keeping track of official game times.Other duties as assigned.
