General Description:
Under the direction of the assigned supervisor, the Water Distribution System Operator performs a variety of operations and maintenance duties associated with distributing and producing water.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- As assigned, assists in the efficient operation and maintenance of the water distribution system.
- Operates or assists in operating water distribution facilities, including operation of machinery and equipment.
- Responds to reports of leaks/breaks or abnormal conditions in the distribution system as assigned and locates leaks/breaks.
- Performs or assists in performing minor maintenance of distribution equipment.
- Performs or assists with maintenance of facilities and grounds.
- Performs or assists with performing cross connection inspections and testing.
- Keeps records of cross connection inspection and testing as assigned.
- Collects and records distribution system data and prepares or assists in preparing maintenance records and operational reports as assigned.
- Collects or assists in collecting samples, performing routine field analyses and recording results as assigned.
- Remains current with public safety codes and regulations as they apply to the services provided.
- Performs or assists with turning on and shutting off water mains, services, and fire lines.
- Flushes or assists in flushing the water distribution system to ensure water quality.
- Operates, tests, maintains and repairs water valves and hydrants.
- Performs or assists in performing water distribution system leak testing.
- Interacts with customers regarding inquiries, complaints and concerns in a courteous, effective and timely manner.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
RELATED DUTIES:
- Participates in cross functional work teams and committees to evaluate and/or improve processes and promote the overall goals of NPU.
- Works with management and fellow employees to identify and correct health and safety concerns.
- Participates in setting group goals, assessing group accomplishments and providing feedback for continuous process improvement.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
- A high school diploma or equivalent.
- Two (2) years of water distribution experience preferred.
- Must possess or obtain a State of Connecticut Grade II Water Distribution License within two (2) years of employment.
- Must possess or obtain a State of Connecticut Cross Connection license within two (2) years of employment.
- Must possess or obtain a certification from the State of Connecticut Department of Health for the Surveying of Facilities for compliance with regards to backflow and cross connection within two (2) years of employment.
- Must possess a valid State of Connecticut Driver’s License.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Working knowledge of tools, methods, materials and equipment associated with the treatment and distribution of quality drinking water in compliance with regulatory and industry standards.
- Working knowledge of the hazards associated with plant and distribution system operations
- Demonstrated aptitude for learning and keeping current with rapidly changing technical information.
- Basic understanding of mechanics, electricity, and electronics.
- Working knowledge of state (DPH & DEEP) and federal (EPA) water regulations.
- Ability to make accurate mathematical calculations.
- Ability to gather information, prepare reports, and maintain inventory.
- Must be computer proficient including MS Office, GIS/GPS, and customer information systems.
- Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
- Ability to follow safety rules and procedures.
- Demonstrated ability to operate within established policies, practices and regulations.
- Demonstrated ability to interact positively, professionally and proactively with customers, external contacts and contractors.
- Ability to instill confidence by resolving customer problems in a prompt, courteous and timely manner. Able to use interpersonal skills and technical knowledge to extract information from the customer and explain technical problems/solutions.
