Job Summary:
The Public Services Assistant contributes significantly to the day-to-day operations of the library. They use a multitude of skills to ensure an excellent user experience for those visiting the library through effect problem-solving, conflict-resolution, and leadership by example.
They support their colleagues and patrons by offering consistency and continuity. They help with peer-to-peer training as necessary.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Supervision of support staff may be necessary on a project-by-project basis. Supervision of department may be necessary in the absence of the Director and Coordinator.
FLSA:
- Hourly, non-exempt.
Employment Type:
- Regular Full-Time.
Pay:
- $17-$19.50/hr

Essential Duties/ Responsibilities:
- Embraces the mission, vision, and values of the library.
- Upholds ALA’s Library Bill or Rights, Code of Ethics, and Freedom to Read statement.
- Provides outstanding customer service in person, via phone, and email.
- Understands, interprets, explains, and applies relevant policies and procedures.
- Performs all the duties of a Circulation Assistant, such as but not limited to:
- Checks out items and places holds.
- Processes library card applications and orients patrons to library services
- Processes returns and shelves.
- Assists patrons with finding items and answering general library questions.
- Performs duties of an Adult Services Assistant, such as but not limited to:
- Assists with scanning, faxing, and copying.
- Assists with research involving online resources.
- Provides notary, proctoring, and passport application services.
- Processes interlibrary loan requests.
- Provides basic computer and device help.
- Maintains scheduled hours and/or fill in as needed in the Adult Services department.
- Creates displays and marketing materials.
- Contributes to the library’s online presence.
- Assists colleagues with special events and other projects as assigned.
- Leads by example without supervisory responsibilities.
Essential Skills/Abilities:
- Ability to communicate well with others.
- Ability to multi-task and prioritize work while exceeding the needs of library patrons.
- Ability to work independently with little direct supervision.
- Ability and desire to work as part of a team.
Essential Education and Experience:
- Minimum of 3 years customer service experience in libraries, preferred.
- Other education and experience qualifications will be considered.
Essential Physical Requirements:
- Physical demands include lifting 40 pounds regularly, sitting, standing, reaching, crouching, and repetitive tasks
- Ability to work regularly scheduled shifts (including daytime, evening, and weekend hour) and flexibility to work extra hours as needed.
