Your day to day as an Engineering Intern
As part of our Engineering Department, you will experience a mix of fieldwork and research tasks that provide a comprehensive understanding of municipal engineering. Your days will vary depending on assignments, ensuring that your intern experience exposes you to a variety of municipal engineering projects, from hands-on activities in the field to analytical research back in the office. By immersing yourself in diverse tasks, you'll enhance your problem-solving skills and contribute to innovative solutions that impact the community.
Generally, your schedule will be daytime hours Monday through Friday.
Requirements for this Engineering Intern job
To thrive as an Engineering Intern with the City of O'Fallon, you will need a diverse skill set that aligns with the demands of a municipal setting. The ability to organize and document your findings is essential. Additionally, strong analytical skills are necessary for data gathering, preparing reports, and making strategic recommendations in collaboration with other departments. Effective communication will enable you to engage with residents regarding traffic-related issues and service requests.
Experience in reviewing capital improvement and construction plans and familiarity with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is preferred, but not required.
Our Engineering Interns fill various roles within the Construction Inspection, Project Management and Stormwater departments. Some of the duties and responsibilities for Interns in these areas include, but are not limited to, the following :
- Reviewing capital improvement, residential and commercial construction plans for compliance, accuracy and completeness.
- Monitoring and inspecting capital improvement and development project infrastructure (i.e. roadways, storm, sanitary, water, facilities, etc.)
- Inspecting sidewalks, entrances, curb ramps, detectable warning devices, pedestrian street crossings, pedestrian handrail, stairways, and other items for compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
- Inspecting temporary and permanent traffic control devices.
- Reviewing plans, specifications, schedules, submittals and cost estimates for construction projects.
- Reviewing traffic related issues with residents and staff; prepares recommendations.
- Organizing and documenting findings of studies and prepares recommendations for implementation of new systems, procedures, or traffic control devices.
- Preparing a variety of estimates, studies, reports, and related information for decision-making purposes; conducts research, analysis, and prepares recommendations regarding proposals for programs, grants, services, budget, equipment, etc.
- Investigating and follows-up on citizen requests for service, complaints, and requests for information, as assigned.
- Assisting in the development of notices, flyers, brochures, newsletters, media releases, news articles, and other informational materials about programs and services.
We're looking for someone who is currently enrolled in either an accredited college or university or a Construction / Project Management program and have obtained the status of at least sophomore or equivalent, with a working knowledge of the principles and practices of Civil Engineering, Construction / Project Management or a closely related field.
