What are the responsibilities and job description for the Seasonal - Communications Intern (Temporary-Summer Hire) position at City of Oak Harbor?
This temporary seasonal intern position is available within the Executive Administration department during the summer months to provide an intern with training opportunities while assisting the City with necessary work.
As a Communications Intern, you will play a vital role in shaping the narrative of our community. You’ll assist in creating content that informs, engages, and inspires our residents. You will gain hands-on experience in strategic communications, social media, and community outreach.Work activities involve multiple skills and may include, but are not limited to, any or all the following depending on area of assignment, operational necessity, emergency services, special projects, and seasonal factors:
- Content Creation: Write posts, social media updates, and utility newsletters. Goal of content is to highlight city events, initiatives, and success stories.
- Social Media Management: Help manage the City of Oak Harbor’s social media accounts, create engaging posts, and interact with followers in a positive manner.
- Research & Reporting: Gather community feedback and analytics.
- Event Support: Assist in planning and executing events such as open house events, staff events, and attend local events with City officials.
- Collaboration: Work with local schools and organizations to promote initiatives that align with the school district’s strategic plan, including student engagement and educational outreach.
- Creative Projects: Get involved in designing promotional materials and brainstorming innovative ways to reach our community.
Perform other duties, tasks, and responsibilities as assigned.

- Knowledge of customer service.
- Good communication skills necessary to complete the required task.
- Knowledge of operating office types of equipment.
- Knowledge and ability to operate desktop computers using Windows 365 and other computer software necessary to complete assigned tasks.
No direct supervisory responsibilities.An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential job functions may be considered.
- Must be at least 18 years of age at time of hire.
- High school graduate or GED equivalent.
- Enrolled in continuing education with college or university.
- Must have knowledge of using office types of equipment including computer.
- Must have knowledge and ability to operate Windows Operating System, Microsoft Office 365 (i.e., word processing, spreadsheet, database, and presentation/graphics software.)
- Must have practical communication skills both verbally and in writing; to deal tactfully and courteously with both internal and external customers; and the ability to make effective public presentations.
- Complete a comprehensive criminal background screening before hire.
- Valid driver's license and ability to provide driver's abstract with a good driving record.
Work is performed in an office or meeting environment and requires the ability to remain stationary and move for extended periods of time. Requires the ability to communicate information and ideas so others understand, ability to observe details at a close range and ability to operate computer and other office equipment. Attendance at after-hours City Council meetings may be required and hourly work schedule will be adjusted to accommodate. Flexible work schedule available upon approval.
