Solid Waste Driver
Summary: Under basic supervision, operates specialized trucks and heavy motorized equipment used for a variety of job functions at Solid Waste division of the Public Works Department (PWD); operates vehicles, equipment, and tools in compliance with all safety regulations and standard procedures.
Essential Functions: Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Operates a variety of machinery to move and transfer solid waste, refuse, and discarded materials; operates specialized vehicles for collection and emptying of trash containers.
- Maintains and cleans equipment and reports mechanical defects and vehicle maintenance needs.
- Utilizes proper safety precautions in all work performed; reports problems and emergency situations; recognizes, avoids, and reports unsafe acts, conditions, accidents, and injuries.
- Supports the divisional operations with regular and timely attendance.
- Supports the relationship between the City of Odessa and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with visitors and City staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education, Training and Experience Guidelines:
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent preferred.
- 2 year's work experience operating heavy equipment, preferably with the City of Odessa OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Knowledge of:
- Operation, maintenance, and capabilities of heavy power-driven equipment.
- Safety policies and standards, and safe driving practices in public streets.
Skill in:
- Safe and efficient operation and maintenance of vehicles and equipment, vehicle inspection procedures, and making minor adjustments to operating controls.
- Following standard operating and safety procedures and verbal and written instructions.
- Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with co-workers.
License and certification requirements:
- Texas State Commercial Driver's License Class B is required
- Special vehicle training and licensing may be required.
Physical demands and working environment: Work is performed indoors, outdoors, and at City facilities; requires constant physical efforts, and the ability to bend, reach, stoop, and lift objects; may be exposed to safety hazards and dangerous tools and equipment; safety precautions must be followed, including use of safety equipment. City approved safety shoes must be worn.
