The City of Olathe is looking for a talented Data Analyst to help us support and improve operations and resource allocation for the Olathe Police Department. This on-site position (not a remote position) requires a deep understanding of data management, data visualization, and statistical analysis to effectively support decision-making across departments. The role requires working closely with senior analysts, data engineers, and other stakeholders to ensure the quality and relevance of the data insights provided. The successful candidate must be proficient with SQL, building interactive dashboards, and possess strong analytical skills. Must also be familiar with ETL processes and data warehousing concepts and knowledge of law enforcement operations is a plus. A thorough Criminal Justise Information Services (CJIS) background check is also required for this position.
The Data Analyst is part of a career progression of Data Analyst I, II, and III, allowing the possibility of future career growth within the Data Analyst role. For this position, we are looking for a Data Analyst I or II with the following salary range based on incumbent qualifications:
- Data Analyst I base pay is $62,400 to $76,000, requiring at least one year of related work experience and a bachelor's degree in a related field. Additional experience may substitute for education.
- Data Analyst II base pay is $68,640 to $83,000, requiring at least three years of related work experience and a bachelor's degree in a related field. Additional experience may substitute for education.

The Data Analyst II conducts advanced data analysis, builds and maintains data systems and supports the City's strategic initiatives with actionable insights. This position utilizes their understanding of data management, data visualization and statistical analysis to effectively support decision-making across departments. Works closely with senior analysts, data engineers, and other stakeholders to ensure the quality and relevance of the data insights provided. The Data Analyst II is the second level in a three-level career progression of Data Analyst I-III.
Key Responsibilities
- Develops, maintains and optimizes queries to extract and manipulate data from various databases; analyzes large datasets to identify trends, patterns, and insights to improve operations; creates and manages reports to ensure data accuracy and relevance; builds dashboards to visualize key performance indicators; supports users by pulling data, creating reports and dashboards.
- Networks with stakeholders across departments to gather data requirements, understand business objectives, provide tailored insights and integrate data from multiple sources; communicates findings and recommendations to non-technical stakeholders clearly and effectively.
- Ensures accuracy, consistency and reliability of data; monitors data processes to promptly identify and resolve discrepancies or issues; conducts regular data validation and cleansing activities to maintain high data quality.
- Identifies opportunities to enhance existing data systems and reporting processes; maintains knowledge of the latest trends and technologies; recommends and implements improvements in data collection, storage, and analysis techniques.
- Develops training materials for internal use and other City departments; documents data sources, methodologies, and processes for transparency and knowledge sharing.
Qualifications
Experience: A minimum of three years of experience in the area of focus is required. Proficiency writing, running and working with industry standard reports and other supporting technologies is also required. Experience working with more advanced systems and reports for the industry is desired.
Education: A bachelor's degree in a field related to the area of focus is required. Equivalent experience and/or certifications can substitute for education.
Licenses & Certifications: A valid driver's license and favorable driving record are required.
