Our Pump Station Maintenance Technicians play an important role in the operation and maintenance of the equipment systems that assure the effective processing and transmission of wastewater for the citizens of Olathe. A typical day in this role might include general maintenance of pump stations; emergency response, possibly after hours; and asset management data entry.
This position requires a Class A CDL (commercial driver’s license). You’ll have the opportunity to obtain a Class A CDL by participating in the City of Olathe’s CDL training program. It’s up to you to pass the testing, but we will set you up for success with our in-house training program.

The Pump Station Maintenance Technician I performs skilled and semi-skilled work in the installation, maintenance, and repair of the City’s wastewater pump stations. A significant portion of their time is spent repairing and maintaining SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) software, lift station controls, valves, and portable bypass pump stations. They also perform checks within the wastewater infrastructure. This is the first level of a three-level career progression of Pump Station Maintenance Technician I, II, and III.
Key Responsibilities
  • Installs, troubleshoots, and repairs pump station electrical components (low voltage, 110, 220, and 480 volt); performs preventative and breakdown maintenance on lift stations, including controls, pumps, air mixers, motors, valves, meters, and instrumentation; operates and maintains wastewater infrastructure; conducts physical and visual inspections of lift stations; clears debris and handles troubleshooting, repair, and replacement for electrical and mechanical breakdowns.
  • Operates a variety of equipment, such as trucks, dump trucks, excavators, loaders, combination jet trucks, CCTV equipment, snowplows, street sanders, hand tools, power tools, lawn equipment, electronic test meters, and pumps; participates in housekeeping duties, grounds, and building maintenance.
  • Participates in city-wide snow removal efforts using snowblowers and snowplows; performs on-call duties including first response to pump station failures and wastewater emergencies.
  • Works directly with City staff and external customers to resolve equipment-related issues; responds to questions and concerns from the public, contractors, and businesses, providing feedback and condition updates to management.
  • Provides guidance and training to department staff on equipment operation and job responsibilities.
Qualifications
Experience: Experience repairing and maintaining electrical systems or pumps is preferred.
Education: A high school diploma or equivalent along with the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successfully job performance is required. Courses in electrical and/or pump maintenance are preferred.
Licenses & Certifications: A valid driver’s license and favorable driving record are required. A Class A commercial driver’s license with air brake and tanker endorsement is required within six months of employment. A Class I ABC certification in Plant Maintenance or Wastewater Collection is required within one year of employment.
Environmental or Physical Demands: Pump Station Technicians perform their job duties outside in all types of weather and are exposed to conditions including sun, wind, rain, snow, ice, pollen, dust, fumes, sanitary waste, and other allergens or airborne particles. They work in confined spaces and trenches. They are exposed to noise from traffic and equipment. They must be able to perform physical activities that require considerable use of one’s arms and legs moving one’s whole body to lift, balance, walk, twist, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl while handling or carrying materials. They will operate a variety of hand and power tools, powered equipment, and commercial vehicles. They may drive or ride from site-to-site multiple times throughout the workday. Must be able to work safely in distracting situations including high volume traffic areas.
