About the Position
Under general supervision of the Parks Maintenance Supervisor this position plans, schedules, implements, monitors, and evaluates work activities involved in managing the City's urban street trees and trees on park land. (This is an AFSCME represented position.)
Ideal Candidate Profile

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
1. Knowledge of the work hazards and the applicable safety precautions associated with park maintenance work; including lifting and lowering of devices, chainsaw operation, aerial lift operation, felling, pruning, and chipping.
2. Performs technical tree work such as pruning, tree felling, bucking, brush clipping, and tree removals using a variety of ground and aerial techniques and equipment. This includes using rope and saddle and spur and flip line climbing techniques, aerial man lifts, cranes, chainsaws, and rigging systems.
3. Knowledge of the work hazards and applicable safety precautions associated with park maintenance work.
4. Ability to perform basic carpentry, cement finishing, plumbing, and electrical work.
5. Ability to operates a wide variety of equipment such as trucks, brush clippers, tractors, loaders, chainsaws, blowers, trimmers, as well as other power equipment and hand tools.
6. Ability to perform landscape installation and prune a variety of trees and shrubs.
7. Performs routine maintenance on tree care gear, tools and equipment.
8. Ability to perform small engine repairs.
9. Ability to appropriately apply herbicides, pesticides and fertilizers.
10. Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods, occasionally under unfavorable conditions.
11. Ability to work from technical drawings and blueprints.
12. Ability to follow instructions.
13. Ability to select and use appropriate tools for the completion of assigned tasks.
14. Ability to use common sense and apply safe work habits when working in dangerous areas or with power equipment.
15. Ability to use tact and good judgment in responding to questions from citizens and the general public.
Experience/Education:
1. Four or more years of recent experience in technical arboriculture including technical tree removals and pruning, rope and saddle, spurs and flip line, aerial lifts, rigging and related tools and equipment.
Special Requirements:
1. Must possess a valid Washington State Driver's License.
2. Must possess a Class A CDL or ability to obtain within 6 months from date of hire.
3. Must obtain and maintain International Society of Arboriculture Certified Arborist Certification within one year of hire.
4. Ability to secure flaggers card within 6 months of hire.
5. Ability to secure First Aid and CPR certification within 6 months of hire.
6. Extensive knowledge in horticultural practices, plant identification, and turf management is preferred.
7. Ability to obtain special certifications on the job is recommended. Some examples include WSDA Pesticide Applicator License, PSN-ISA Tree Risk Assessment Certification desired.
