What are the responsibilities and job description for the Lifeguard - Aquatic Center (Seasonal/Limited Term) position at City of Onalaska?
The City of Onalaska is seeking to hire Lifeguards. An employee in this position works under the supervision of the Aquatics Center Specialist. Position responsible for providing a safe environment at the Aquatic Center. Lifeguards will provide a positive image of the City’s aquatic program by attentive, conscientious, and courteous behavior at all times. Scheduled hours may vary.
Essential Job Functions:
- Enforces Aquatic Center rules, regulations, and policies governing the conduct of persons using the facility.
- Monitors assigned areas for potential accidents or other hazards, and is continually alert to developing situations.
- Responds in the appropriate manner to assist or rescue any person in need, and administers necessary first aid, CPR, and artificial respiration as the situation requires. Handles blood borne pathogens in accordance with the city exposure control plan.
- Assists with the maintenance and cleaning of the facility, and makes minor adjustments on filter and chemical system as directed.
- Maintains order in the facility and, as far as possible, anticipates potential trouble and takes appropriate steps to prevent it. Warn facility patrons against unsafe practices.
- Maintains a friendly, helpful, and courteous manner with patrons and fellow employees at all times.
- Assists with the lesson instruction program or swim team program as directed by Aquatic Specialist or Head Lifeguard.
- Tests water, inspects equipment, and cleans all areas before, during, and after daily operations.
- Reports definite or potential hazards, and unsafe pool or equipment conditions.
- Maintains an acceptable appearance in both uniform and personal hygiene at all times.
- Completes incident, rescue, and accident reports as necessary.
- Develop and maintain effective relationships with staff and public.
- Maintain accurate and complete records.
- Performs other duties as requested or assigned.
Compensation: Wage range for this seasonal, limited-term position is $12.00 to $15.00 per hour depending on qualifications and budget. Flexible scheduling available. There are no benefits associated with limited-term positions.

Must be at least 15 years old. Current certification in CPR and First Aid and American Red Cross Lifeguard training required (class available upon hire). Must work as a member of an integrated team to assure the maximum safety of Aquatic Center patrons. Good communication and strong organizational skills required.
