Senior Librarian

Effective July 2025, a 9.5% general salary increase will be applied.

The Ontario City Library has an exciting opportunity for a self-motivated Senior Librarian to administer programming, archival processing, special collections care, outreach, and specialized reference for customers in addition to supervision of paraprofessional staff. The Senior Librarian for Local History oversees the daily operations of the Robert E. Ellingwood Model Colony History Room.

The Senior Librarian for Local History will be expected to establish and maintain good relationships with other library units, city agencies, school districts, and community groups. Other responsibilities for this position include :

  • Soliciting donations from the public.
  • Coordinating the acquisition of collections and local history-related materials.
  • Partnering with organizations and individuals to participate in outreach activities and coordinating local history-related programming.
  • Arranging, describing, and rehousing archival collections.
  • Managing digitization projects.
  • Overseeing team activities including developing workflows and procedures, training, setting goals and timelines, and evaluating outcomes.

The ideal candidate takes initiative, is highly organized, enjoys being part of a team, has excellent communication and writing skills, possesses leadership skills, and follows and anticipates current library and archival trends. The Community Life and Culture Agency

The City of Ontario's Community Life & Culture Agency endeavors to meet the Ontario City Council goal to "encourage, provide or support enhanced recreational, educational, cultural, and healthy city programs, policies, and activities." Community Life & Culture does this through a comprehensive array of programs, activities, services, and events available through the Recreation & Community Services, Library and Museum Departments as well as the Arts & Culture program.

The following essential functions are typically performed by the Senior Librarian classification :

  • Provides specialized reference assistance requiring knowledge of local history, the library's collection, and reference materials.
  • Compiles bibliographies of library materials.
  • Makes oral demonstrations utilizing multimedia equipment and online resources; conducts library orientations and training classes; assists in assembling and arranging displays and exhibits.
  • Researches catalog files and reference materials in response to requests on a range of topics.
  • Selects, orders, and classifies new books and materials; makes determinations concerning the binding, replacement, and withdrawal of materials.
  • Develops and implements programs and services; markets programs and produces promotional materials; makes related presentations.
  • Trains support staff and responds to technical questions regarding professional protocol and department policies and procedures.
  • Conducts fund monitoring and analysis; prepares reports and records for assigned section.
  • Supervises and provides instruction and assistance in the scheduling and training of other library personnel and volunteers within assigned section; reviews and evaluates employee performance.
  • Stays informed regarding trends in the library science profession and archival management by attending in-service training, attending appropriate conferences and seminars, and reading professional literature.
  • Attends meetings and other functions; represents the library at professional committee meetings; provides information and participates in discussions regarding library activities.
  • May act as library supervisor in the absence of senior staff.
  • Minimum Requirements

    Education

    Equivalent to a Master's degree from an accredited college or university in Library Science or a closely related field.

    Experience

    Three years performing professional librarian work.

    Licenses

    Valid Class C California driver's license and an acceptable driving record at the time of appointment and throughout employment.

    Special Requirements

    Ability to work nights and weekends.

    Desirable

  • Ability to speak, read, and write in Spanish.
  • Experience managing archival collections and demonstrated knowledge of preservation techniques.
  • Experience managing digital archival collections.
  • Successful grant writing experience.
  • Experience in project management.
  • Previous supervisory experience.
