This is a part-time internship position. The work schedule is to be determined and is flexible.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: The Fire Intern will work closely with the Fire Division's Certified Unified Program Agency (CUPA) to support new and on-going initiatives within the Fire Department’s CUPA section. Examples include general office activities, document scanning, creating electronic files, answering general questions from the public and documenting training courses. Other tasks and errands as needed, and assist with projects as assigned.
CHARACTERISTICS OF SUCCESSFUL PERFORMERS: Candidates shall have an interest in the Fire Department; be at ease in dealing with the public and handling complaints from operators with tact and diplomacy; be detail-oriented, organized, have good time-management skills within a vibrant work environment and seek answers, should none be obvious. Candidates must be flexible, have good verbal and written communication skills, computer skills and work well with others and with minimal supervision.
Intern and Extra Help positions are not expected to last more than 960 hours. Under the terms of the city's benefits plan and policies you will not be eligible for benefits, other than those required by federal or state law, due to the short duration of your employment. You will be provided paid leave in accordance with City policy. Additionally, the City requires enrollment in retirement programs as the City does not participate in social security. In this position, employment with the City of Oxnard is at-will and those selected for temporary placement retain the option, as does the City of Oxnard, to end employment at any time, with or without notice and with or without cause.

POSITION SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES MIGHT INCLUDE:
The position will be assigned to CUPA and may be responsible for:
Updating documents and reference materials;
Input training documentation;
Exploring available technologies to update complaint workflows, inventory tracking, inspection management;
Assist in developing an updated CUPA webpage;
Assisting facilities with general questions related to their California Environmental Reporting System (CERS) submittal;
Other duties as assigned.
The following are the minimum qualifications necessary for entry into the classification:
Education/Experience:
Must be at least 16 years old.
License/Certificate:
Employees under 18 years old in this classification must possess or be able to obtain a California state work permit prior to employment.
Other Requirements:
- Must be able to effectively communicate in English, both orally and in writing

Note:
For most positions, the City of Oxnard relies on office automation (Microsoft Office) and web-based enabled tools, therefore candidates must be proficient and comfortable with computer use to perform functions associated with on-going work.
Regular and reliable attendance, effective communication skills, and development of effective working relationships are requirements of all positions.
City staff may be required to play an active role in the event of an emergency, which may include changes in responsibilities and working hours.
Employees are required to participate in the City's direct deposit plan and are paid on a bi-weekly basis.
