JOB SUMMARY

Performs a variety of responsible clerical and support activities in the daily operation of the Page Public Library circulation desk. This position has a high degree of public contact and is primarily responsible for checking material in and out and assists in training circulation staff.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Provides direct public service at the circulation desk, including policy explanation, complaint resolution, problem solving, patron registration, fine collection, and the circulation of materials.
  • Creates weekly overdue notices and follow-up letters.
  • Insures proper daily operation of public area of Library during business hours.
  • Collects fines and fees
  • Performs departmental administrative duties including scheduling, assignment of daily duties, writing reports, and statistical reporting.
  • Resolves problems and forwards to library manager.
  • Performs basic equipment troubleshooting and maintenance. Will follow through with a work order for the library manager’s approval to arrange for servicing of library equipment and/or facilities.
  • Assists in planning, implementing, and evaluation of circulation services. Participates in committees that recommend policies to library manager. Monitors and oversees patron services to ensure the efficient, effective, and economical delivery of services.
  • Processes interlibrary loan request by locating the material and preparing the necessary paperwork. Receives and logs material borrowed from other libraries.

Maintains interlibrary loan transactions and correspondence files.

  • Develops and maintains all routines necessary to ensure the effective operation of the library consistent with the Page Public Libraries policy and procedure. Provides suggestions for improvements to circulation policies and procedures.
  • Supervises daily activities of Library Aide, Circulation Specialist, and volunteer positions. Provides leadership and guidance to circulation services through supervision, staff selection, orientation, training, staff development, and staff meetings.
  • Communicates and interprets Page Public Library’s policies and procedures to staff and the public. Responds to queries and resolves circulation problems and concerns from staff and public. Informs the library manager of problems and incidents that need attention or resolution.
  • Provides quality service through leadership, guidance, and communication to and with library staff to meet community needs.
  • Assists with collection maintenance.
  • Arranges booking of meeting room and schedules displays.
  • Orders and maintains supplies for circulation.
  • Provides the library manager with monthly statistics from Circulation, or more often as requested.
  • Contributes to the library’s long- and short-range plans concerning the use of new trends and technologies and making recommendations, as applicable.
  • Makes recommendations to library manager for capital budget items.
  • Creates displays/material to enhance the library collection and materials to promote library services.
  • Maintains a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality.
  • Serves as librarian-in-charge, as needed.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • One (1) year of previous clerical/library experience (office and cataloging) with prior library experience preferred;
  • or any combination of experience and training predicting the ability to successfully fulfill the required knowledge.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of library organization, facilities, services, methods, and policies is important.
  • Knowledge of office procedures.
  • Knowledge of computers and solutions library circulation system, including the “OPACs”. Alternative programs may be considered.
  • Skill in typing at least 45 wpm.
  • Skill in adapting to varying atmosphere day by day.
  • Skill in using small hand tools for minor repairs. Basic ability to operate copier, fax, microfilm, microfiche reader/printer, and video equipment.
  • Ability to interact with library patrons courteously and effectively is vital.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with other departments and local businesses is a must.
  • Ability to interact with co-workers and establish effective working relationships.
  • Ability to use listed tools and equipment.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee must exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. The following physical abilities are required: balancing, climbing, crouching, feeling, fingering, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, talking, and visual acuity.
