What are the responsibilities and job description for the Street/Traffic Maintenance Worker Lead position at City of Palm Springs?
Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Lead, plan train and review the work of staff responsible for performing a variety of semi-skilled repair and construction duties in the maintenance of City streets, and traffic control maintenance duties including fabrication, installation, maintenance and repair of street and traffic signs.
- Plan, direct and participate in preparing surface for paving, patching potholes, setting forms and mixing, and pouring cement. Fabrication of street and traffic signs and posts; cut and weld steel; paint and apply reflectorized materials.
- Train assigned employees in their areas of work, including street maintenance methods, traffic control devices, procedures and techniques. Supervise the use, care and operation of street maintenance equipment including shovels, jack hammers, tampers, cement mixers, compressors, skip loaders, small tractors, rollers, hole diggers, sledge hammers, rollers, grinders, spray guns and epoxy machines.
- Verify the work of assigned employees for accuracy, proper work methods, techniques and compliance with applicable standards and specifications.
- Place cones, barriers and signs to define the work area and protect the public, excavate and fill trenches and ditches; locate and repair leaks. Install and maintain signs and delineators; dig postholes and mix cement; remove and repair posts and signs as necessary; remove old paint and markings by using grinding equipment.
- Prepare and maintain routine records and reports on work performed.
- Ensure adherence to safe work practices and procedures.
- Attend and participate in professional group meetings; stay abreast of new trends and innovations in the field of street and traffic maintenance.
- Assist in the performance of maintenance work on equipment, buildings, and facilities as assigned; clean and maintain tools and equipment.
- Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provide information within the area of assignment; resolve complaints in an efficient and timely manner.
- Estimate time, materials and equipment required for jobs assigned; requisition materials as required.
- Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
- Three (3) years of increasingly responsible public works street/traffic maintenance experience is required.
Training:
High School Diploma or equivalent education is required.
License or Certificate:
Possession of, or ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire, an appropriate Class A driver license ( a driving record may be deemed unsatisfactory for any of the following reasons: three or more moving violations or reportable accident within the last three years; conviction of driving under the influence within the last five years) is required.
- Incumbents are enrolled in the California Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) Pull Notice Program. The DMV Pull Notice Program provides information on the incumbents driving record and driving record status on a periodic basis to the City.
- Ability to work various shifts including nights, weekends and holidays is required.
- Must successfully complete a pre-employment background clearance, fingerprints and a physical and drug screen.

This position works in a field/construction site environment and is exposed to noise, dust, smoke, fumes, gasses, inclement weather conditions and works around heavy construction equipment and machinery. This position may work at heights, on scaffolding and ladders and may require maintaining physical condition necessary for heavy, moderate or light lifting, standing or walking for prolonged periods and operating motorized equipment and vehicles.
