Duties: The Recreation Specialist is responsible for planning, organizing, leading, and implementing recreational programs and special events for active seniors. This position possesses a strong focus in the recreation and community services program areas. Works in a team environment and assists and/or leads in departmental special events. Works independently but may also lead other subordinate staff members in the absence of the Recreation Manager. Solicits sponsorships and collaborates on partnerships with external sources. Welcomes visitors, gives tours, and answers incoming telephone calls. Arranges chairs, tables, and/or required equipment in designated rooms or other areas for scheduled group activities and programs. Creates new programs and initiates ideas to improve the center's overall programming. Assists staff with the design, production, and distribution of marketing materials and with promoting the Parks and Recreation Department, Madison Jobe Senior Center, and its related services. Transports participants and staff in city bus or other city vehicles as necessary for programs, field trips, and special events. Provides hospitality, staff support and communication. Responds appropriately to accidents and other incidents that require staff intervention. May be required to work flexible schedule including some evenings and/or weekends. May be required to assist in cleaning facilities in the absence of custodial staff. Must have and maintain, without interruption, all necessary licenses, certifications, clearances, and/or job requirements.
Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Parks and Recreation Administration, Senior Adult Services, Gerontology, or closely related field. Minimum of 3-5 years of related experience; or a combination of experience and education. Valid Texas driver's license and a good driving record. CPR certification and First Aid certification within six months of hire. Food Manager certification must be obtained within 6 months of hire. PREFERRED: Bilingual (English/Spanish). Valid Class B CDL with passenger endorsement
