Pay : $29.14 hourly
Minimum Preparation for Work :
- Sufficient education to read and understand technical material and prepare simple written reports and enter data electronically into the City's fleet management system.
- Three (3) years of experience as a medium duty / heavy duty truck or heavy equipment mechanic.
- Combination of education, training, and / or work experience equal to or higher than the requirements listed above as determined by Human Resources.
- Provides a basic minimum set of mechanics tools as required by Fleet Management.

Nature of Work :
This is skilled heavy duty truck and equipment mechanical work approaching the journeyman level.
An employee in this class is responsible for performing skilled tasks in the maintenance and repair of heavy duty trucks and specialized heavy equipment. The employee is responsible for diagnosing and executing repairs needed, reporting time and supplies used on each vehicle serviced or repaired, and ordering parts. The work is assigned by means of verbal and written orders and is carried out independently by the employee in accordance with standard practices of the trade.

Mental and Physical Requirements :
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands and fingers to hold or feel, reach with hands and arms, walk, talk, smell and hear.
Employee must be able to visually inspects vehicles and parts. Specific vision abilities include near distance, far distance, color, peripheral vision, and depth perception. Employees will be required to use hearing as applicable for the troubleshooting, repair, and completion of projects.
Job requires dexterity for handling small parts and tools in tight spaces, and sufficient strength for handling larger parts and tools. Job requires employee to push, pull, reach above / at / below shoulder, stand, stoop, crouch, bend, walk, crawl, kneel, and carry / lift 10-100 lbs. Work must be completed utilizing safety glasses, steel-toed work shoes, uniform, hearing protection and other PPE (Personal Protective Equipment).
Work Environment :
An employee in this job is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions, and occasionally exposed to wet and / or humid conditions, toxic or caustic chemicals, and has a risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment may be loud.

Do you have knowledge of air brake operating systems, diagnostic procedures and performance standards?
Do you have the ability to perform a full brake overhaul in compliance with FMCSR requirements?
Do you currently have a 609 HVAC Certification and Airbrake Certification?
All technicians must currently hold, or acquire the 609 HVAC Certification and Airbrake Certification provided by Fleet Management within one year of employment. Can you meet this requirement?
