Position Summary
The First Judicial District of Pennsylvania, is seeking a highly motivated Judicial Law Clerk to support Judge Natasha Taylor-Smith. A Judicial Law Clerk assists a judge by conducting legal research, preparing memoranda and draft opinions, managing case files, and performing a range of administrative and legal duties. This position offers a unique opportunity to work closely with the judiciary, develop a deeper understanding of court procedures, and refine legal research and writing skills in a fast-paced, intellectually engaging environment.
By Order of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania, effective September 1, 2005, all law clerks employed by judges of the courts of the Unified Judicial System of Pennsylvania are prohibited from appearing as counsel in the division/section of the court in which the judge by whom they are employed serves. Further, in courts which have no formally established divisions or sections, the law clerks are prohibited from appearing as counsel in the court itself.

- Research legal sources for briefs or opinions based on statutory law, decisions, and precedents of higher courts.
- Search for and study legal records and documents to obtain data applicable to cases under consideration.
- Maintain file on case documents and all related correspondence.
- Conduct in-depth legal research and analysis on a wide range of legal issues.
- Draft bench memoranda, judicial opinions, orders, and other legal documents.
- Review case files, pleadings, motions, and briefs to identify key issues and recommend rulings.
- Attend court proceedings, take notes, and provide insight or summaries for the judge.
- Ensure legal documents and filings comply with procedural requirements.
- Assist the judge in managing their docket, including scheduling and case tracking.
- Communicate with counsel, court staff, and occasionally the public, in a professional manner.
- Maintain confidentiality and uphold the ethical standards of the judiciary.

- Knowledge of the techniques and processes of legal research.

Qualifications
- Graduate of an accredited law school.
- Membership of the Bar of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania is not a requirement for Law Clerk 1; however, if you are a current member of the Bar, you must be and remain in good standing.
- Strong academic credentials.
- Law review or moot court experience preferred.
- Prior internship or clerkship experience in a legal or judicial setting, preferred.
- Familiarity with court procedures and local rules, preferred.
- Successful completion of a criminal background investigation.
- Ability to perform the essential functions of the position.
