NOTE: The eligible list from this posting will also be used to fill Emergency Water Distribution Repair Worker positions in the Water Department.

About The Position

This is field water distribution repair and maintenance work at the full performance level. Incumbents perform a variety of assignments required by the repair and maintenance of water mains and equipment. Employees in this class may work evening, weekends, and holidays as assignments require. Work is performed under the close supervision of field crew chiefs. An employee in this class performs firstline repair and maintenance of segments of the city-wide water distribution system. Work involves the exertion of moderate physical effort under conditions which can be only partially controlled.

Minimum Requirements

Minimum Training, Education & Experience

The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests. Candidates must meet requirements within 30 days after the last date for filing applications.

  • CIVIL SERVICE STATUS:

Presently employed by the City of Philadelphia with permanent Civil Service status and a Performance Rating of Satisfactory or higher.

AND

  • EDUCATION: Education equivalent to completion of the eighth school grade.

AND

  • EXPERIENCE: Two years of recent field laboring experience in the installation, repair or maintenance of water or gas distribution mains and equipment, one year of which has been above the laborer level.

Physical & Medical Requirements

Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.

Required Licenses & Certifications

Possession of a valid proper class motor vehicle operator’s license as issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania prior to appointment and during tenure of employment as a Water Distribution Repair Worker if required by work assignment.

Any equivalent combination of education and experience determined to be acceptable by the Office of Human Resources.

ELIGIBLE LIST

CONCURRENT: Both Open-Competitive and promotional examinations have been announced concurrently.

Departmental and interdepartmental promotional eligible lists of permanent City employees and an Open-Competitive eligible list will be established as a result of these examinations. The appointing authority may make an appointment from either one of the promotional lists until these lists are exhausted and, thereafter, may appoint from the Open-Competitive list.

If you do not have permanent civil service status with the City of Philadelphia, or are otherwise ineligible to compete in promotional examinations, you should not apply for this examination. You should apply for the Open-Competitive examination for this class announced concurrently on the same date. The examination number for the Open-Competitive examination is

Candidates who pass the exam and are placed on the civil service list will be retained on the list for a minimum of one year and a maximum of two years after the establishment of the Eligible List.

Preference For Philadelphia Residents

Candidates who have maintained a bona fide residence in Philadelphia for at least one year prior to the date of the civil service examination shall have priority over all other persons receiving an identical test score. If you have maintained a bona fide residence in Philadelphia for at least one year immediately preceding May 20, 2025, you are eligible to claim residency preference.

To receive such preference, candidates must respond to the question regarding residence later in this form.

The response on this application will be used to determine eligibility for preference for residents. Documentation of residence may be required if there is any question as to whether you meet the residency preference requirements.

If an applicant does not respond to the appropriate residence question, it will be assumed that the applicant does not qualify for residence preference. Eligibility for residence preference must be determined by the date of the test administration. No requests for residence preference will be granted after the test administration.

Projected Exam Date

This examination will be scheduled for May 20, 2025. Please note that this examination date is subject to change.

Candidates must have access to a desktop computer or laptop, with internet access. If you do not have internet access, please contact the analyst listed on this announcement.

An Eligible List will be established the week of June 2, 2025. Please note that this date may change.

Test Review
