About This Position
The City of Phoenix Public Works Department is seeking an Assistant Director to oversee Solid Waste Services. The Assistant Director will lead the Solid Waste organization, with more than 600 employees under its Solid Waste arm, Phoenix Public Works provides trash, recycling and other waste diversion services to more than 400,000 households.

This individual will be integral in the policy development and staff direction to meet the key city objectives related to the Zero Waste Initiative and other environmental programs set forth by the City Manager, Mayor and City Council.
This individual exercises considerable independence in working with division heads, managers of other City departments, as well as external stakeholders on problems relating to Public Works activities. Work involves representing all major program areas of the department in liaison activities and to coordinate special projects across divisions. Works to advance the department¿s needs by identifying and executing on the capital project needs of the various sites. Work assignments are broad in scope and require the use of independent judgment and initiative in making technical and managerial decisions of considerable difficulty.
Supervision is exercised over Deputy Public Works Directors and other managerial and administrative staff. Work is performed under the general direction of the Public Works Director, and performance is evaluated through reports and conferences.
IDEAL CANDIDATE
The ideal candidate for this position has a strong foundation of the Solid Waste industry. The ability to determine best practices, implement systems and work collaboratively. This individual will have strong labor relations experience and the ability to work cross functionally with other departments in the city. The ideal candidate has an ability to work with various service vendors to meet the needs and objectives of the organization.
SALARY
Hiring and Pay Range: $170,000 - $182,000 annually.

Pay Range Explanation
- Pay range is the entire compensation range for the position classification.
- Hiring range is an estimate of where you can receive an offer. The actual salary offer will carefully consider a wide range of factors, including your skills, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, training, and internal equity.
- The City contributes 9% of salary into 457/401(a) plans with no matching required. $6,000/annual car allowance and $1,440/annual cell phone allowance.

Minimum Qualifications
- Five years of responsible experience in planning, organizing and directing a large public works or related operations.
- Three years of experience supervising professional level staff.
- Bachelor's degree in public administration or a related field.
- Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
