About This Position

The HVAC Technician II (Building Equip Op II) offers experienced HVAC/Mechanical Systems Technicians the opportunity to join our team in performing skilled and semi-skilled work in the installation, operation, repair, and maintenance of heating and air conditioning systems/components and other mechanical equipment, including automatic doors/gates, pumps, air compressors, and fire/life safety systems, in one or more public buildings. This position often works independently, requiring a high degree of self-motivation and the ability to work alone.

Aviation Department

The Aviation Department is seeking a motivated and dedicated HVAC Lead Technician (Building Equipment Operator II) to join our fast-growing team. This position will supervise or act as a lead in the planning, installation, operation, and maintenance of heating, refrigeration, and other mechanical equipment. The HVAC Lead Technician will operate, troubleshoot, and repair HVAC and order parts as needed. Responsibilities include working in the field supervising and directing Building Equipment Operators I and other maintenance support employees according to general or specific instructions received from a Building Equipment Supervisor.

Aviation employees can be assigned to work shifts within the 24-hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week business operating hours. Depending on the crew¿s assignment, you could be assigned to a first, second, third, weekend, or split shifts and holidays.

Phoenix Convention Center

The Phoenix Convention Center and Venues hosts a diverse range of conventions, trade shows, meetings, and entertainment events in one of the premier convention facilities in the United States. The Phoenix Convention Center currently has two HVAC Technician II (Building Equip Op II) vacancies.

HVAC Technician II (Building Equip Op II) Team Members Are Currently Assigned 10-hour Workdays And May Include Weekends, Holidays, And Evenings Shifts. Currently There Are 3 Different 4-10 Shifts

  • Sunday -- Wednesday 2:30 p.m. - 1:00 a.m.
  • Wednesday -- Saturday 5:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
  • Wednesday -- Saturday 2:30 p.m. - 1:00 a.m.


Public Works Department

HVAC Plant Technicians are responsible for overseeing the preventative maintenance program and operation of the building automation systems for occupied space comfort. This position performs more difficult technical tasks involved in operating, maintaining, overhauling, and repairing a variety of air conditioning, heating, ventilation, refrigeration, and other mechanical equipment in one or more City of Phoenix buildings.

Responsibilities Include

  • Supervising and directing Building Equipment Operators I, Building Maintenance Workers, and other maintenance support employees according to general or specific instructions from a Building Equipment Supervisor.
  • Leading and giving technical directions to employees.
  • Prioritizing work assignments.
  • Operating equipment according to manuals, directions, specifications, or warning signals.
  • Interpreting performance charts and control panels that reflect the efficiency of each piece of equipment in the system.


Positions are available on second shift (1:00 p.m. - 11:30 p.m.) or third shift (11:00 p.m. - 9:30 a.m.). Weekly working schedules consist of Sunday to Wednesday or Wednesday to Saturday.

Water Services Department

The Water Services Department oversees the management and operation of the City of Phoenix's collection, distribution, water, and wastewater treatment services for 2.5 million residents across five valley cities. Infrastructure includes 7,000 miles of water, 5,000 miles of sewer, eight treatment plants, 50,000 fire hydrants, and 90,000 manholes. We produce around 110 billion gallons of water annually, test nearly 200 substances, and reclaim almost all wastewater for irrigation, wetlands, and energy. Phoenix is pioneering advancements in the water industry, securing a sustainable 100-year water supply to ensure a thriving future for generations ahead.

The HVAC Technician II in Water exercises supervision over Building Equipment Operators I, Building Maintenance Workers, and other maintenance employees according to general or specific instructions received from a Building Equipment Supervisor or Building Maintenance Foreman. Work is reviewed daily through reports, logs, and conferences with the supervisor.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

The ideal candidate will be a mechanically inclined technician with the desire to learn mechanical systems beyond HVAC equipment such as auto-glass, auto-doors, jet-bridges, and evaporation cooling units (ECU).

The Ideal Candidate Will Have The Ability To

  • Work independently and safely using standard HVAC technician tools & equipment, i.e. climbing ladders, electric and hydraulic lifts, power tools, hand tools, refrigerant recovery equipment.
  • Work in the field supervising and directing Building Equipment Operators I, and other maintenance support employees according to general or specific instructions received from a Building Equipment Supervisor.
  • Proficiently read and interpret blueprints, performance charts, control panels and PC terminals.
  • Use Building Automation Systems (BAS) to operate HVAC equipment and analyze the information to assist in diagnosing system issues.
  • Use various tools and equipment such as general mechanic tools, conveyor belt lacer, Volt Ohm Meter (VOM), and metal fabricating tools.
  • Give technical direction to employees and prioritize work assignments.


SALARY

$30.31 - $40.61 per hour base wage. The actual salary offer will carefully consider a wide range of factors, including your skills, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, training, and internal equity.

Additional Compensation For Unit 2 Positions Includes

  • Shift differential pay is available for hours worked during nights and weekends.
  • Standby is currently compensated at $2.50 per hour.
  • Callout requests and responses are paid at time and a half normal hourly wage.
  • Paid time off includes 13.5 paid holidays, 12 vacation days, and 15 sick days and personal leave days.
  • 401(a), 3.62% employer contribution of base wage for Unit 002 employees.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Two years of journey level experience in the operation, repair, and maintenance of large, modern refrigeration and heating systems, supplemented by training in modern refrigeration and air conditioning systems.
  • Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
  • Aviation positions: Universal EPA and CFC (Universal Chlorofluorocarbon) certifications required at time of application.
  • Phoenix Convention Center positions: EPA 608 HVACR Universal certification at time of application.

Working Conditions May Require

  • Climbing ladders or steps to reach objects.
  • Moving objects weighing up to 50 pounds more than 20 feet.
  • Walk for prolonged periods.
  • Working at heights greater than 10 feet.
  • Working with 480 volts.
  • Working irregular hours, shifts, weekends, holidays, and evenings.


Preferred Qualifications

The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:

Experience In/with

  • Chillers, cooling towers, and pumps.
  • Pipe fitting, brazing, soldiering, and welding various pipe materials.
  • A customer service-oriented environment.
  • Reading, interpreting and working from prints, sketches, diagrams.
  • Mechanical equipment (auto doors, jetways, air compressors, pumps etc.).
  • Building Automation Systems such as Johnson Controls, Alerton, Andover's Continuum, Delta, and Trane.
  • SAP and MS Office applications (e.g., Word and Excel).


Aviation Department

  • Project lead or supervisory experience.
  • Experience in/with:
    • Parts procurement.
    • Central plant operations.
    • Troubleshooting HVAC controls.
    • Chiller maintenance and repair.
    • Sheet metal fabrication and installation.
    • Reviewing contracts for accuracy and compliance.
    • Automated preventative maintenance programs.
Phoenix Convention Center

  • Experience in/with:
    • Light plumbing repairs.
    • Variable Frequency Drives.
    • Industrial water treatment as it pertains to centralized chilled water plants for comfort cooling applications.
    • Preventative maintenance programs and processes.
    • Central plant equipment, maintenance of chilled water systems, cooling towers and related components.
    • Servicing and repairing of air-handlers, fan-coils, and variable air volume (VAV) systems.
    • Installation and service of package and split HVAC/R equipment.
    • BAS/EMS system monitoring and troubleshooting.
    • Reading and interpreting blueprints and working drawings.
    • Operating air compressors.
    • Automatic gate services and repairs.
    • Servicing and repairing industrial pumps that include domestic, sewer, and hydronic systems.
    • Fire and life safety systems including BAS/EMS system monitoring and troubleshooting.
    • Servicing and repairing air-handlers, fan-coils, and VAV's including the installation and service of package and split HVAC/R equipment.
    • The use of a comprehensive preventive maintenance system to perform routine maintenance on HVAC and related equipment.
  • Three or more years of experience operating, servicing, and repairing commercial chill water systems.
  • Eight or more years of experience in the operation and maintenance of commercial and residential heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVAC/R).
  • Possess a current Universal CFC Certification.

Public Works Department

  • Experience in/with:
    • Leading or supervising employees.
    • Residential and commercial package unit and split system repair.
    • Residential and commercial HVAC installation, replacement, and repair.
    • HVAC/R installation.
    • Chillier plant maintenance and repair.
    • Sheetmetal and ductwork.
    • Building Energy Management systems (BMMS).
    • Coordinating contract work and permitting.
  • Currently possess a Universal EPA certification.
  • CFC Certification (Universal Chlorofluorocarbon) / HCFC (Hydrochlorofluorocarbon).

Water Services Department

  • Two years journey level experience.
  • Experience in/with:
    • Evaporation cooling units (ECU).
    • Boilers.
    • Preventative maintenance programs and processes.
    • Computer Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS).
    • Troubleshooting, repairing, replacing 3-Phase commercial/industrial equipment.
    • Variable Frequency Drives
  • Eight years of experience in the operation and maintenance of commercial and residential heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVAC/R).
