ABOUT THIS POSITION
The Phoenix Public Library is seeking Part-Time Municipal Security Guards for the summer heat relief season. Our foremost commitment is to ensure the safety and security of all visitors in a protected environment. The Municipal Security Guard's responsibilities include:
- Support evening security efforts in Library Branches that also operate as cooling centers for citizens needing refuge from the heat.
- Work compassionately with customers who may be experiencing homelessness.
- Deescalate and engage with customers who may be experiencing mental health challenges.
- Patrol and observe the activities of persons in and around City facilities.
- Provide customer service, assess problems, and exercise tact and judgment to resolve them.
- Monitor live video screens and foot patrol the building, grounds, and parking lots to observe unusual behavior and to prevent vandalism.
- Prevent unauthorized access to restricted areas.
- Remain at a fixed post to observe activities.
- Answer routine inquiries and direct customers to appropriate areas.
- Complete log entries and incident reports.
- Ensure that all customers and staff have vacated the building at closing and perform a security check of all doors and windows.
- Enforce correction of infractions through verbal warning.
- Remove customers from buildings as needed and detain more serious offenders for proper authorities.
- Escort personnel from the building after hours.
The heat relief program runs from May 1st through September 30th. Part-time opportunities are available at the Cholla, Harmon, and Yucca libraries. Work hours are 4:15 p.m. - 10:15 p.m., five days a week, including weekends and holidays.
IDEAL CANDIDATE
- Can operate and monitor CCTV systems with attention to detail and demonstrate a proactive approach to identifying and addressing security concerns.
- Has exceptional problem-solving skills and the ability to remain calm under pressure, especially when assisting customers in emotionally charged or difficult situations.
- Can exhibit strong written and verbal communication skills, able to convey information clearly and professionally.
- Possess strong written communication skills, with the ability to produce clear, concise, and accurate daily activity logs and thorough, detailed incident reports.
SALARY
Pay Range: $20.02 - $32.62 per hour.
Hiring Range: $20.02 - $25.56 per hour.

- Hiring range is an estimate of where you can receive an offer. The actual salary offer will carefully consider a wide range of factors, including your skills, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, training, and internal equity.
BENEFITS
Part-time employees are eligible for earned paid sick time, city training, and free or discounted bus and light rail fares.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- High School diploma or general education degree (GED) required.
- Demonstrated ability to do or learn to do security, as shown by prior training and experience.
- Some positions require CPR, general first aid, and AED certification.
- All positions require completion of the Naloxone administration training during the first month of employment.

- These positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.

Working Conditions Require:
- Availability for the full duration of the summer position, May 1 through September 30, with no more than 5 business days requested for vacation.
- Working irregular hours, weekends, and holidays spanning approximately 22 weeks.
- Performing foot patrol outdoors over irregular terrain in a variety of weather conditions typical of the extreme desert environment.
- Remaining in a standing position for extended periods of time, from one continuous hour up to four total hours at a time per day, while performing a variety of tasks.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:
- Current certification in First Aid, CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation), and AED (Automated External Defibrillator) training.
- College coursework in Justice Studies, Management, Business, or other related fields.
- Experience as a Police Officer, Security Guard, or in Military service.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
- Experience delivering exceptional customer service in various formats, including in-person interactions, phone calls, and email communication.
- Spanish proficiency is desired, though not required.
