ABOUT THIS POSITION


More than 52 million passengers traveled through Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport in 2024, one of the busiest airports in the country in the nation's 5th largest city. Phoenix Sky Harbor is the largest of three airports in the Phoenix Airport System (Phoenix Sky Harbor, Deer Valley, and Goodyear airports) which is operated by the City of Phoenix Aviation Department and has an economic impact of more than $44 billion annually.

The Aviation Department is seeking a Public Information Officer provides crucial support to the Department. This position acts as the after hours on-call media liaison, responding to customers on social media, tracking media coverage, producing videos for the department, communicating Aviation department news through the official website and social media, developing internal communications, assisting with crisis communication, writing articles for the Web and external publications, participating in videotaped and telephone interviews with the media, and other areas related to public information.to

The essential duties of this position are:

  • Writing and producing videos, including web videos, training videos, public service announcements and promotional videos. This includes writing scripts, shooting, and editing videos.
  • Writing articles for the Web and external publications.
  • Assisting in editing and updating all content for official department websites, including web maps.
  • Copyediting and proofing reports, newsletters, and similar documents created by other Aviation divisions for correct spelling and grammar.
  • Managing and editing all content for official department websites.
  • Researching, developing, writing, and coordinating media campaigns.
  • Providing basic graphic design backup using Photoshop and InDesign.
  • Participating in videotaped and telephone interviews with the media.
  • Developing internal employee communications and assisting with crisis communication.
  • Assisting in editing and updating all content for official department websites, including web maps.
  • Responding to inquiries received from traditional media and fthe public through social media outlets.
  • Writing and producing videos, including web videos, training videos, public service announcements, and promotional videos. This includes writing scripts, shooting, and editing videos.
  • Communicating Aviation Department news through the official department website and social media.
  • Managing customer response through social media networks and generating content.
  • Preparing, reviewing, and editing news conferences, news releases, newsletters, publications, and scripts.
  • Tracking news coverage of the department, distributing articles, and maintaining the department's news clip files.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

  • Knowledge of AP writing style guidelines.
  • Knowledge of current principles, techniques, and objectives of public information and relations programs.
  • Knowledge of graphic design principles and Adobe software programs such as Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to organize the many activities involved in a public relations program.
  • Ability to oversee multiple projects simultaneously in a deadline-driven environment to ensure the team delivers a high-quality project on time.
  • Ability to communicate Aviation Department news through the official department website and social media.
  • Ability to track news coverage of the department, distribute articles, and maintain the department's news clip files.
  • Ability to communicate orally with other employees, media members, other agencies, and the public by telephone, in a one-to-one, face-to-face setting, and in a group setting in the English language.

SALARY


Pay Range: $71,240 to $110,510 annually.

Hiring Range: $71,240 to $95,451 annually.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Four years of responsible experience in journalism, mass media communications, or public relations.
  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, mass media communications, public relations, advertising, marketing or a related field.
  • Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.

The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:

  • Experience writing articles for the Web and external publications.
  • Experience providing basic graphic design back-up using Photoshop and InDesign.
  • Experience participating in videotaped and telephone interviews with the media.
  • Experience with researching, developing, writing, and coordinating media campaigns.
  • Experience using a content management system and web user interface design preferred.
  • Experience preparing written materials e.g., news releases, newsletters, publications, and scripts.
  • Experience managing customer responses through social media networks and generating content.
  • Experience developing internal employee communications and assisting with crisis communications.
  • Experience writing, producing, and editing videos (web videos, training videos, PSAs, and promotional videos).
  • Experience assisting in editing and updating all content for official department websites, including web maps.
  • Professional writing experience, including the ability to produce written documents using proper sentence structure, punctuation, and grammar.
  • Experience using social media such as Facebook, X, Instagram, YouTube, and other cutting-edge social sites to communicate and promote organizational news, events and activities, and to capture analytics.
