Sign Specialist II - Aviation Department

Over 50 million passengers traveled through Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport in 2024, one of the busiest airports in the country in the nation's 5th largest city. Sky Harbor is the largest of three airports in the Phoenix Airport System (Phoenix Sky Harbor, Deer Valley, and Goodyear airports) which is operated by the City of Phoenix Aviation Department and has an economic impact over $44 billion annually.

The Aviation Department is hiring a Sign Specialist II. This position performs skilled tasks in the design and manufacture of signs.

Duties include:

• Using specialized computers, scanners, software, plotters, silk-screening equipment, engravers, and other processes to create standard or customized signs.
• Types of signs produced include traffic signs and other exterior signs, as well as interior building signs such as directional signs, ADA and life safety signs, banners, and name plates.
• Types of sign material include aluminum, vinyl, plastic, brass, glass, and wood, among others.
• Working with customers or vendors to discuss needs and to advise on different methods, materials, wording, and size/placement of signs.

This position often works independently and exercises discretion and judgment for such tasks as editing graphics, mixing paint or inks, designing signs, fabricating signs, installing signs, and maximizing the capabilities of the sign-making computers, software, and other equipment. Some Sign Specialists II serve as lead workers in the absence of the shop supervisor. Work is performed under general supervision of a Traffic Maintenance Foreman III, Building Maintenance Foreman, or Supervisor, Aviation Supervisor I, or another supervisor.

• Ability to provide high-level customer service to internal and external customers.
• Ability to perform maintenance, repair, and inspection of regulatory and standard airport signage.
• Knowledge of proper techniques when using tools, paints, inks, and thinners used in the manufacture of signs.
• Possess skills in manufacturing signs in an industrial sign production environment following established standards.

Pay Range: $20.51 to $35.08 per hour.

Hiring Range: $20.51 to $31.82 per hour.

• Three years of experience in sign production, including experience with computerized sign making equipment and silk screening.
• Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
• Working conditions:

The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:

• Experience working in an airport environment or 24/7 environment.
• Experience using SAP, SharePoint, and xPort to open, track, and close work orders.
• Experience of creating sign mock-ups using the latest versions of CorelDraw and Adobe Illustrator.
• Experience in aviation facilities maintenance, aviation sign maintenance, streets sign maintenance, airport line services.
