The City of Pittsburg seeks to fill two vacancies for MAINTENANCE WORKER I - Utilities & Facilities in the Public Works Department.
The Public Works Department is responsible maintenance of the City streets, streetlights, traffic signals, sewers, storm drains, building, fleet equipment, marina/harbor and the water distribution system including water meter reading and water service connections. The Maintenance Worker I will be trained to perform semi-skilled tasks supporting the construction and maintenance of the City's Utilities and Facilities operations in the assigned area such as stormwater, streets/concrete, sewer, and meter/backflow. Other duties include ensuring the safety of equipment through routine maintenance checks, interacting with City staff and the public, and identifying safety and health hazards. We are looking to fill two vacancies in the Water Distribution Maintenance Division which maintains and performs scheduled and emergency repairs on water mains, isolation valves, customer service lines and meters, and fire hydrants.

- Sewer and water system maintenance and underground construction experience including knowledge of spill reporting and water distribution procedures; water distribution/waste water certification
- Building maintenance experience in areas of carpentry, electrical, roofing, HVAC, flooring and minor repairs
- Streets maintenance experience with paving, concrete, traffic striping, and heavy equipment
- Pipefitting, arc welding, and small equipment operation (such as Bobcat and jackhammer)
- Basic understanding of Microsoft Outlook and Word for email communication, managing appointments, and creating/updating various documents
- Possession of a class A/B license
- 2% for Class A or B with air brake and tank endorsements
- 2% for D-1 water distribution certificate
- 5% for D-2 water distribution certificate
- 2% for grade 1 collection system maintenance certificate
- 5% for grade 2 collection system maintenance certificate
- 2% for an employee who is certified and authorized by the City Manager or designee to train other City employees on the proper use of a narrow isle forklift, lift truck, and powered pallet jack.
- 2% for an employee who is certified and authorized by the City Manager designee to train other City employees on the proper use of a front-end loader, skid steer loader and a backhoe.
- 2% Class A/B Trainer pay (not subject to incentives cap of 5%).

Duties include, but are not limited to all assignments:• Learns and performs a wide range of maintenance, repair, and construction activities on City streets, water/sewer systems, storm drains, curbs, sidewalks, buildings, and other facilities.
• Performs a variety of unskilled/semi-skilled and heavy physical labor; removes, hauls, and dumps trash.
• Operates a variety of motorized, power, and hand-powered machines and equipment to include: roller, dump truck, back hoe/front loader, jackhammer, tamper, compressor, arc welder, sewer rodder, mower, concrete saw, auger or sand blasting machine, pick-up truck, street sweeper, shovels, rakes, picks, hoes, wrenches, edgers, drills and saws.
• Performs preventative and routine maintenance on motorized and power equipment, notifies appropriate personnel regarding needed repairs and/or other operational problems.
• Identifies a variety of safety/health hazards, as well as, public works facilities and systems in need of maintenance or repair; notifies appropriate party of potential problems to ensure a timely and effective response.
• Responds to emergency calls on weekends, holidays, and evenings as assigned and according to primary and secondary callback lists.
• May provide lead direction to seasonal employees.
• Establishes and maintains positive working relationships with representatives of community organizations, state/local agencies, City management and staff and the general public.
Water & Sewer Assignment:
Learns to and constructs and repairs storm conduits, curbs, gutters and drainage facilities; installs, repairs and maintains water and sewer mains and lines; repairs water meters; makes new sewer connections; repairs drains and sewer facilities; operates jack hammers and other tools and equipment; inspects tools and equipment for safety and mechanical defects; installs and repairs water service connections, meters and boxes; operates trucks and other construction vehicles and equipment; locates and repairs leaks in water lines; cleans storm drains, flood control facilities and inlets; responds to emergency calls as assigned.
Water Meters Assignment:
Reads several styles of water meters; records usage on hand-held reading device; checks for inoperative, defaced or by-passed meters and for street, house or meter number changes; initiates field orders to repair damaged meters or to report street leaks or unsafe conditions; assists the public with questions regarding meter reading, consumption or billing issues; relocates and replaces meters; helps locate services needing backflow prevention devices.
Streets Assignment:
Learns to and breaks and removes asphalt and concrete surfaces; digs, shovels, hauls, load, and unloads materials; operates jack hammers, pavement breakers and other hand and power tools; rolls and irons, rakes and compacts asphalt; operates trucks and other construction vehicles and equipment; assists in the installation and maintenance of City signs, road markings, striping and delineators; paints street lines and crosswalks.
Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
Experience: One (1) year of applicable experience in construction, maintenance or related work.
License: Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Class C California driver's license and proof of auto liability insurance is required.

Salary : $57,384 - $69,744
