Inspector, Code Enforcement

Ensures the safety, accessibility, and quality of the City’s public right-of-way (ROW) by investigating possible code violations in the right-of-way, such as unpermitted obstructions, and bringing activities into compliance with City Codes and Ordinances and the City of Pittsburgh Right-of-Way Manual.

Salary: $59,986 per year.
Union: This position is included in the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, Local 2719 bargaining unit and will be filled in accordance with the provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Qualifying Requirements: 
Your City of Pittsburgh application will be reviewed and your work experience and education/training will be evaluated to determine if you meet the qualifying eligibility requirements listed below for this position. You will be sent an eligibility letter regarding your eligible/ineligible status. 

• WORK EXPERIENCE: The application must clearly show one (1) year of full-time experience in construction inspection, building inspection, or as an engineering technician or in a related area (e.g., any construction field or position). (Less than full-time experience will be calculated on a pro-rated basis.) 
• EDUCATION/TRAINING: None required for this position. 
• EQUIVALENCY: Education/training and/or work experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis if the application clearly shows the required number of years to meet the Total Qualifying Requirement for this position (based on the sum of work experience and education/training listed above). The Total Qualifying Requirement is one (1) year. (See NOTE under the General Application Requirements Section above regarding the verification of education/training.)

• Inspects the public right-of-way for compliance with Title 4 of City Code, the City of Pittsburgh Right-of-Way Procedures Manual, and other departmental policies and procedures.  
• Maintains daily inspection logs. 
• Ensures that all work is performed in accordance with established safety policies and procedures.  
• Responds to 311 service complaints for items such as unpermitted obstructions of the street or sidewalk. 
• Represents the City by appearing in court when assigned or required. 
• Answers complaints and questions concerning job-related matters by telephone, in writing and/or email. 
• Identifies and informs responsible parties when violations are found with City Codes and/or regulations and provides parties a path towards resolution.  
• Interprets and explains City Codes, Rules and Regulations when required or requested. 
• Performs activities and functions of related lower-level personnel and other related tasks/duties as assigned or required.
