What are the responsibilities and job description for the Temporary Library Assistant II - Local History (Part Time) position at City of Pittsfield?
Berkshire Athenaeum, Pittsfield’s Public Library, is seeking a part-time assistant in the Local History Department. This individual will operate a Bookeye 5 professional overhead book scanner to create digital images of historic city tax volumes and perform related tasks.
HOURS AVAILABLE: Hours may fluctuate from zero to nineteen hours per week and may include some day, evening, and weekend hours, depending on departmental needs. Training is anticipated to happen during weekday shifts.
Responsibilities
Apply training on archival procedures and best practice standards for care and handling of historical documents
Rehouse photographs, newspaper clippings, microfilm copies, and other documents according to archival processing guidelines
Digitize materials using an auto-feed or flatbed function scanner
Exercise judgment in evaluating appropriate processing of materials, according to training provided
Perform quality control and revision to digitized documents, including optical character recognition
Create appropriate metadata for each record in a Collections Management System, according to training provided
- Advance project goals efficiently, working independently for stretches of time.
- Performs other special projects as assigned, both one-time and ongoing.
Qualifications
- A high school diploma is required, with some college or technical school course work desired; or one year of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Computer skills including facility with basic internet searching; familiarity with steps involved in computer use, including logging in, saving, printing; familiarity with scanning a plus
- Demonstrated skills in reading a variety of handwriting styles, including cursive
- Demonstrated problem-solving skills
- Demonstrated patience and skill in dealing with fragile materials
- Attention to detail
