The successful candidate may be offered a position in either the Park Equipment Operator or the Senior Park Equipment Operator classification. The range for the Park Equipment Operator is $18.58 - $21.37 per hour; and for the Senior Park Equipment Operator is $20.48 – $23.56 per hour.

The City of Plano is seeking a dedicated and skilled individual to join our Parks Department as a Park Equipment Operator or Senior Park Equipment Operator. The ideal candidate would perform all aspects of golf course maintenance. Responsibilities include operating various equipment such as tractors, loaders, backhoes, mowers, string trimmers, hedgers, and other maintenance tools. This role also requires detailed handwork and manual labor to maintain and enhance the quality and appearance of our golf courses. Summer hours: Monday 4:00am - 3:00pm, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, 4:00am - 12:00pm, Friday 4:00am - 9:00am, alternating weekends Saturday and Sunday 4:00am - 9:00am.

Winter hours: Monday 5:00am - 1:00pm, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 5:00am - 2:00pm, Friday 5:00am - 10:00am, alternating Weekends - One Weeday Off, Saturday and Sunday 5:00am - 10:00am.

Distinguishing Characteristics: This is the journey-level classification in the Park Equipment Operator series. The incumbent operates light and/or heavy equipment and follows procedures to accomplish end results, within guidelines. Incumbent may lead the work activities of others in the absence of the Park Equipment Operator, Senior. This class is distinguished from Park Equipment Operator, Senior in that the latter is a higher-level class in the series that performs more complex technical, investigative, and supervisory duties requiring a higher level of knowledge and skill.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Management reserves the right to add, modify, change, or rescind the work assignments of different positions and to make reasonable accommodations so that qualified employees can perform the essential functions of the job.

  • Operates a variety of specialized equipment to maintain golf course grounds.
  • Performs general labor tasks to maintain a safe, attractive, and user-friendly golf course, including weed control, mowing watering string trimming, and other golf course maintenance and shop duties.
  • Assists with various golf course specific cultural and best management practices, including aerification, top dressing, verti-cutting, hand watering, sodding and turf repair.
  • Assists in granular application of fertilizers.
  • Identifies and reports mechanical problems of equipment requiring repair, performs routine cleaning of equipment, inspects assigned equipment for safe and proper operation at the beginning and end of each workday.
  • Ensures conditions are safe in the area where work is performed; Completes assigned duties while maintaining a safe distance from golfers.
  • Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work schedule is essential.

Marginal Duties:

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Typical Decisions: The incumbent is responsible for: the proper maintenance and upkeep of assigned sites; inspecting and maintaining assigned equipment to ensure it is in operable condition; identifying and eliminating potential safety hazards; use of safe work methods and safety equipment and PPE; operating equipment within the guidelines of the appropriate Operator’s Manual. Incumbent must determine proper methods of maintenance and repair for each project.

Minimum Qualifications:

Knowledge of: Operation and maintenance of equipment; routine construction, repair and maintenance methods; basic safety standards; landscaping maintenance.

Skill in: Communicating clearly both verbally and in writing; operating light and/or heavy equipment used in the construction, maintenance, and repair of assigned functional operations.

Education: No formal education required. High school diploma or GED equivalent preferred.

Experience: One (1) year of previous landscaping or construction experience which involves the operation of light and/or heavy equipment in assigned area of responsibility.

Any work-related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above Minimum Qualifications is an acceptable substitute for the above specified education and experience requirements.

Licenses and Certifications: Texas Class “C” driver’s license within 30 days of hire per state law.

Conditions of Employment: Must pass a drug test, driver license check, criminal history background check, periodic CJIS background check (for positions requiring access into Police buildings) and social security number verification check.

Senior Park Equipment Operator

Distinguishing Characteristics: This is the advanced journey-level classification in the Park Equipment Operator series. The incumbent plans detailed methods to attain desired objectives working within established policy. Methods require use of initiatives and resourcefulness in developing processes and procedures. Works under indirect supervision, conferring with supervisor on unusual matters.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Operates a variety of specialized equipment to maintain golf course grounds.
  • Performs general labor tasks to maintain a safe, attractive, and user-friendly golf course, including weed control, mowing, watering, string trimming, bunker raking, tree trimming, and other golf course maintenance duties.
  • Leads with various golf course specific cultural and best management practices, including aerification, top dressing, verti-cutting, hand watering, sodding and turf repair.
  • Applies granular and liquid fertilizers and spot treatment of weeds/pests using various application methods under supervision of the Superintendent or Assistant Superintendent.
  • Leads in the daily setup and preparation of the golf course, changing of hole locations, practice area preparation and tee marker placement.
  • Maintains proper sand depth in bunkers utilizing proper bunker preparation practices and equipment.
  • Operates large equipment for shaping, debris removal, material hauling without damaging playable areas.
  • Identifies and reports mechanical problems of equipment requiring repair; Performs routine cleaning of equipment, inspects assigned equipment at the beginning and end of each workday for safe and proper operation.
  • Ensures conditions are safe in the area where work is performed; Completes assigned duties while maintaining a safe distance from golfers.
  • May lead the work of others.
  • Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work schedule is essential.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions : Must possess mobility to work in and around City buildings, parks, and facilities, to operate a motor vehicle and drive on surface streets; strength, stamina, and mobility to perform light to medium physical work and around machines, and to operate varied hand and power tools and specialized equipment; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone or radio. The job involves fieldwork requiring frequent walking in operational areas to identify problems or hazards. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate above-mentioned tools and equipment. Positions in this classification bend, stoop, kneel, and reach when completing maintenance, repairs, and various daily tasks. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 75 pounds, or heavier weights with the use of proper equipment .

Employees work in and around buildings and facilities and are exposed to constant noise, cold and hot temperatures, temperature swings, dust, mechanical hazards, and hazardous odors and fumes.
