Assist in providing technical, professional, and advisory services to residents and city personnel regarding forestry and horticulture and assist in a variety of technical activities designed to promote and maintain a healthy urban forest ecosystem.
This position is temporary, typically starting in May and going through September. Shifts are typically Monday - Friday, 7:00 am - 3:30 pm.
Essential Functions
Provide exceptional customer service to internal and external customers.

Provide the public and city personnel with technical and professional guidance related to controlling Shade Tree Diseases (DED & Oak Wilt) and hazardous trees on public and private property within the city. Emphasis is placed on maintaining positive relationships with city residents.
- Follow procedures for tree inspection, marking, monitoring and removal in conformance with state and local guidelines.
- Work with City Forester and contractors for removals and follow-up inspections.
- Maintain accurate records and reports to effectively manage the diseased tree control program.
Respond to public requests for information regarding trees and shrubs.
- Correctly identifies trees and shrubs, both native and exotic and accurately diagnoses environmental stresses, both biotic and abiotic.
- Provide remedies and solutions to relieve identified stresses.
- Provide recommendations and guidance for planting efforts with regard to energy conservation, appropriate species and cultivator selection, and post planting care.
Assist in maintaining GIS inventory, to include tree inventory, invasive plant communities and property corners.
Assist in reforestation efforts.
- Prepare sites, both mechanical and chemical.
- Follow recommended (ANA, MN DOT, City standards) handling and plant installation techniques.
- Follow other recommended reforestation activities.
Keeps immediate supervisor promptly informed of developments in areas of accountability to foster well-coordinated program efforts.
Assist in tree-care programs which include trimming, watering, storm damage clean up and removals.
Performs other duties and assumes other responsibilities as apparent or assigned.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
- Must have completed one year of course work in Urban Forestry, Horticulture or related field. This should be reflected on your application)
- Tree Inspector certification or ability to attain certification within 30 days of employment.
- Must have a valid Minnesota Class D driver's license with a good driving record.
- One year of experience with word processing and spreadsheet applications.
- Familiarity with mobile iPad GIS technology.
- Excellent verbal and written skills.
- Demonstrated ability to perform in accordance with the City of Plymouth’s CIVIC values (customer focus, integrity, visionary, inclusion and connection) and comfort with supporting and advancing the city council’s strategic priorities.
Minimum Qualifications
- Course work in dendrology, entomology and pathology.
- Two years of experience in Urban Forestry, Horticulture or related field.
- Working knowledge of site preparation, planting techniques, and associated maintenance of reforestation projects.
