Major Function and Purpose
The Planning Intern supports the functions of the planning staff while gaining knowledge of basic planning functions.
General Function
The Planning Intern performs entry-level planning work as assigned.
Supervision Responsibilities
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

- Provide support to a team of community planners.
- Assist staff in collecting and preparing data for various planning projects.
- Manage the meeting calendar for standing Council committees and the Planning Commission.
- Prepare and distribute committee and Commission meeting packages.
- Conduct field work, including collecting parcel data and searching land records.
- Prepare maps and planning reports of limited or variable complexity.
- Produce sketches and renderings of limited or variable complexity.
- Assist planning staff at community meetings.
- Research funding sources and write grant proposals.
- Conduct basic office functions as needed, such as data entry, file management, and customer service.
- Reliable and regular attendance is required.
- Other duties as assigned.
Contacts and Relationships
The Planning Intern has extensive contact with department staff and members of other departments.
Working Conditions
Work is primarily performed in an office which is busy, oriented to public service and subject to occasional work interruptions. Noise level is moderate. Position infrequently requires outdoor work and includes driving a vehicle. Outdoor work environments can include uneven and unstable walking surfaces, tripping hazards and inclement weather conditions. Telecommuting within Washington state is permitted at the supervisor’s discretion in accordance with City policy.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of planning principles, including pertinent specialty, such as affordable housing, transportation, or land use; general office practices and procedures; English grammar and basic math.
Skills in written and oral communication; research; and analysis.
Ability to effectively utilize various computer software programs such as Microsoft Office, ArcGIS, Adobe Creative Suite, Sketchup, and Internet applications; maintain self-motivation; work independently and effectively in a team environment; remain flexible amidst various planning projects.
Continuous repetitive arm/hand movement is essential. The Planning Intern must be able to discern voice conversation, have hand-eye coordination sufficient to operate computers and other office equipment, and have the physical ability to perform essential job functions. Position requires close vision, color vision, and far vision. Must have the ability to produce legible handwritten documents and may need to push, pull, lift, and/or carry up to twenty (20) pounds.
Minimum Requirements
High School Diploma and active or recent participation in a collegiate level planning curriculum or related curriculum (architecture, landscape architecture, public policy, etc.). Valid driver’s license required upon hire. Out of state candidates are required to obtain a WA state driver’s license in accordance with state law.
Any combination of experience and training that provides the desired skills, knowledge and abilities may be considered.
