Major Function and Purpose
This is a temporary assignment to provide practical work experience while providing support for the functions of a municipal government. Assists in a variety of administrative, research, fiscal or management-directed projects. 
 
General Function
Provide assistance to the assigned department. Depending upon the assignment, work may include functions such as data entry; creating, reviewing, updating and analyzing data; sorting, maintaining, updating, and cataloging various documents and filing systems; observing, recording and summarizing data; data base development; research and report writing; special project coordination and assisting other employees with assigned tasks. 
 
Supervision Responsibilities
None.Job Duties and Responsibilities
Specific duties will vary depending upon the assigned department and task. In general, assigned duties and responsibilities will provide the intern with opportunities to:
  • apply principles and theories learned in the classroom,
  • gain new skills,
  • explore one or more career paths within municipal government, and
  • be mentored by a professional 

Additional duties and responsibilities include:
  • Accurate data entry into standardized or proprietary software programs. 
  • Maintain, update or compile filing and record systems in accordance with department procedures and policies and state retention requirements.
  • Scan, photocopy, sort and distribute documents as required.
  • Create, review, observe, record, update and analyze data. Provide summary of data as requested. 
  • Research and compile information as requested. 
  • Provide customer service in person, via telephone or through email.
  • Prepare documents and reports as required. 
  • Assist with coordination and completion of special projects or events as requested. 
  • Reliable and regular attendance is required.
  • Other duties as assigned

Contacts and Relationships
Intern will report to designated staff member. Assignments may come from multiple departments and employees to whom the intern is responsible for the assigned task. Interaction with employees, citizens and customers both in person and on the telephone is likely, the level of which will depend upon the assignment. 
 
Working Conditions
Hours can be flexible around school schedule; provided the assigned tasks are completed in a timely manner and quality work is demonstrated. Hours can be increased during scheduled breaks from school (i.e. winter break, spring break, and summer break) depending upon the needs of the department. Intern work is typically performed in an office setting although in some cases an intern may go out into the field to collect data or make observations.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of basic office practices and procedures including business English and basic math; principles of good customer service; and, if required by the assignment, industry/trade knowledge relevant for the anticipated project or assignment. 
 
Demonstrated skills in various computer software programs, such as Microsoft Office and Internet applications; specialized software, if required by the assignment; specialized terminology and understanding of key concepts related to specific areas of study, if required by the assignment; use of English both orally and in writing; and research and analysis of data. 
 
Ability to work effectively both as a member of a team as well as independently; and to alternate between various assignments as priorities change.

Physical Requirements
Ability to sit for extended periods of time while operating a computer keyboard and mouse. Requires the ability to operate a personal computer/terminal and other office equipment. Repeated interruption of the work routine is typical. The work area can be noisy.   Substantial telephone and in-person contact with the public, builders, engineers, contractors, developers, governmental agencies and departments require that the individual have the ability to communicate effectively. This position typically requires repetitive motion tasks. The employee will be required to answer telephones. 
 
Minimum Requirements
High school diploma. Current or planned enrollment at an institution of higher learning in pursuit of a degree or trade applicable to the position is preferred. Self starters and those that think outside the box are strongly encouraged to apply.
