RECREATION DIVISION DIRECTOR
RECREATION DIVISION DIRECTOR – Parks, Recreation & Facilities Department - 37.5 hour position.
The mission of Portland Parks, Recreation, and Facilities Department is to enhance the quality of life through people, parks, and programming while creating lasting memories for the people of Portland and its visitors.
The Parks, Recreation, and Facilities Department is made up of a team of 160 full-time staff, and 250 seasonal and on-call staff who work together to improve the quality of life in Portland, Maine. To learn more about the Parks, Recreation, and Facilities Department - click here.
The Recreation Division Director is responsible for administrative and managerial work in planning, organizing and directing the management and operations of the Recreation Division of the Parks, Recreation and Facilities Department. Work is carried out with great independence, initiative and judgment under the supervision of the Director of Parks, Recreation and Facilities. This position plans, directs and manages the administration, employees and operations of recreation, therapeutic recreation and aquatics, and golf course. It oversees recreational programs and facilities, including but not limited to: four community centers, one outdoor pool and two indoor pools, nine Before and After the Bell school sites, and a thirty-hole municipal golf course. Manages the creation and implementation of both existing and new recreational and community programs and events in indoor and outdoor settings to meet community needs.
Additional Duties & Responsibilities:
- This position performs long range planning and development of new recreational facilities, systems and equipment.
- Oversees marketing of programs with supervision of direct mailing of brochures and various other outreach to customers.
- Utilizes social media, newsletters, and other methods to conduct outreach to the community.
- Prepares the annual budget for recreation, golf course, aquatics & therapeutic recreation sections.
- Works across Divisions and Departments to create community programming in indoor and outdoorsettings.
- Works creatively to conduct outreach to under-represented groups to ensure that our programs and facilities are known and available to the widest possible population.
- Represents the Recreation Division in meetings with other City departments, elected officials, outside agencies, public & private organizations and the public.
Requirements of Work:
- Successful candidates will have graduated from a college or university with a baccalaureate degree in Parks and Recreation Management/Administration or Public Administration or a related degree, or any equivalent combination of experience and training.
- Must have a minimum of 10 years of progressive supervisory or administrative experience with recreation programming, services, planning, design and construction of aquatic, golf, and recreation facilities.
- Considerable knowledge of the modern principles, trends and practices of recreation programs, services, aquatics programs, special events and facilities management.
- Working knowledge of recreation, special events, swimming pools systems, golf courses, recreational facilities, therapeutic recreation to include principles and best practices.
- Working experience in municipal government, budget development and human resource management.
- Also required is excellent communication skills and ability to work with populations from varying cultural backgrounds.
- Successful candidates will be a Certified Pool Operator (CPO) and a Certified Parks & Recreation Professional (CPRP).

This is a union position (Grade D61) - Salary range: $88,989 - $112,732/year.
