Pay rate for this position is $18.00 based on experience. Hours range from 10-40 hours a week depending on candidates flexibility. Pierce Island Outdoor Pool schedule is as follows: June 24th 2024- August 23rd 2024. Summer orientation will be held on Saturday June 15th 2024 from 9:30am-1:30pm. The purpose of this position is to perform professional work in the safety and use of the Portsmouth Indoor Pool and Pierce Island Outdoor Pool. Monitors activities in aquatic areas to prevent accidents and provide assistance to patrons while performing directly related work as required. Maintain effective working relationships with supervisors other City employees and the public. Pay rate for Water Safety Instructor is $22 an hour.

Work is performed under variable temperature conditions and noise levels.
Minimum Required Qualifications
Current American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification is required for this position.
Applicants for this position should have some experience in aquatic facility activities or equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge; skills and abilities necessary to perform work.
Physical Requirements
Current position includes some limited physical requirements including: strenuous swimming; remaining stationary for long periods of time; frequently ascend/descend ladders and stairs; and may occasionally need to move and transport individuals weighing up to 100lbs. Work is performed in an indoor pool area where surfaces may be slippery and the risk of falling is present; may be exposed to chlorine and other pool treatment chemicals.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

- Maintains order at facility; including enforcing rules and resolving minor conflicts.
- Maintains constant surveillance of patrons in the facility; recognize and respond to an emergency in under 30 seconds and secure safety of patron in the event of an emergency.
- Provides emergency care and treatment as required until the arrival of emergency medical services.
- Accident prevention where adherence to pool rules is required.
- Presents professional appearance and attitude at all times; and maintains a high standard of customer service.
- Respond to patron questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner.
- Front desk operations; will be trained by supervisor to use point of sale system; answering phone calls; taking registrations; and collection of payments (cash; checks; and credit card).
- Performs various maintenance duties as directed to maintain a clean and safe facility.
- Prepares and maintains appropriate activity reports.
- Communicates and coordinates regularly with appropriate others to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of interdepartmental operations and activities.
- Keeps immediate supervisor and designated others fully and accurately informed concerning work progress; including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems.
- Attends meetings; and in-service training sessions to become or remain current on the principles; practices and new developments in assigned work areas.
- Monitor water quality of the pool & spa by using chemical testing kit in according with NH public bathing code. Report to supervisor or Certified Pool Operator; if water testing is out of range.
- Perform related work as required.
