General Description
The Head Guard is responsible for overseeing daily operations during their assigned shift, ensuring efficient workflow, maintaining high standards of customer service, and leading a team. Additionally, this role includes facilitating regularly scheduled staff training sessions. Must demonstrate strong leadership, problem-solving abilities, and sound decision-making skills in a fast-paced environment.
The position requires the effective use of current certifications and qualifications to optimize the operation of all sites. The Head Lifeguard may also assist with pool operations and facility maintenance as needed. In the absence of the Aquatic Program Coordinator (APC) or Assistant Aquatic Program Coordinator (AAPC), or when scheduled as the shift supervisor, the Head Lifeguard will act as the site manager.
Hiring Criteria
Minimum Qualifications:
Current ARC Lifeguard Certification (or equivalent)
Current ARC Lifeguard Instructor Certification (or ability to obtain within 1 month of hire date)
- Current ARC CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers Certification (or equivalent)
- Demonstrate competency in written and oral communication
- Minimum of 1-year Lifeguarding
- Availability to be on call 2 days a week and availability to work 1 weekend day, must be available 3-4 week days from 12pm until 7pm.
- Exhibits professionalism through competence, knowledge, conscientiousness, integrity, respect, emotional intelligence and appropriateness.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Must be available to work the following; Two on call days, One weekend and at least 3 days out of a week from 12pm until 7pm.
Previous Experience
Prior experience of at least 1-year lifeguarding is required and 1-year swim instructing desired.
Nature of Work
The job requires that the employee work a flexible shift so he/she may supervise the entire spectrum of the aquatic’s operation. This may include early mornings, evenings, and weekends. The ideal candidate will adequately balance the AAPC/APC and other Head Guards in both strengths and weaknesses. The effective management of both facilities (Reaney and PAC) will depend on the coordination of the Aquatic Program Coordinator and other head guards. Together an effective team will develop and continue to promote the philosophies of the Pullman P&R department.
Duties and Responsibilities
Job duties
- Set the standard for professional lifeguarding, both on and off stand, and during patron/staff interactions.
- Implement tasks delegated by the Aquatics Program Coordinator (APC) and Assistant Aquatic Program Coordinator (AAPC) related to operations and maintenance.
- Perform basic facility maintenance as required.
- Supervise staff during shifts, ensuring completion of daily tasks.
- Provide leadership and manage conflict resolution among staff and patrons.
- Communicate any staff or facility issues to APC and AAPC.
- Enforce professionalism and supervise staff behavior.
- Assist AAPC with coordinating special events such as family nights, teen nights, private rentals, and seasonal activities.
- Maintain professionalism when interacting with staff, management, and members.
- Assume facility responsibilities in the absence of APC and AAPC.
- Demonstrate knowledge of Rec1 and related administrative tasks, including memberships, customer service, and daily reports.
- Ensure the safety of participants and staff within the facility.
- Handle paperwork, scheduling, shift coverage, and discipline as assigned by APC and AAPC.
- Attend and contribute to management meetings.
- Assist in facility operations, including staff training, cleaning, safety, customer service, and supervision, ensuring proactive and reactive management.
- As shift supervisor, assign staff based on patron load and secure additional staffing when necessary.
- Primary location is Reaney Park Pool, with potential assignments at the PAFC as needed.
- Exhibit swim instructor qualities at all times while teaching.
- Occasionally teach swim lessons and serve as a substitute when needed.
- Educate staff and patrons on the WEX program and available classes.
- Assist the cashier at the Information Desk when necessary.
Pay Rate: $18/ hour

Hours of Employment:
Flexible scheduling, prefer 15 – 25 hours a week. Must be available 3-4 days a week and 1 weekend day between 12pm and 7pm. May need to work 6 days / week and/or split shifts. Must be the head guard on call two days a week.
