A laborer position responsible for solid waste collection services to residents and businesses of Punta Gorda.



Essential FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES include the following.  Other duties may be assigned as dictated by operational necessity.
  • Collect solid waste from residences and businesses.
  • Refuse collection either by manual pickup from the curb or by the use of a dumpster.
  • Empty the packer at the landfill, following the directions of the landfill personnel to avoid vehicle damage.
  • Clean the packer after being emptied at the landfill.
  • Clean exterior of the truck and inside the packer body.
  • Operate packer when required.

KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of equipment utilized;
  • Knowledge of traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation;
  • Knowledge of relevant state and federal laws and regulations; 
  • Knowledge of city ordinances, policies, and procedures;
  • Knowledge of the geography of the city and of assigned routes;
  • Knowledge of relevant departmental policies, safety procedures, and guidelines.
  • Skill in the use of equipment. 
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions;  
  • Ability to work independently without close supervision;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and supervisors.


EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS:
  • High school diploma or equivalency certificate highly desirable, but not required.
  • Must have at least 2 years of experience in similar type of work.
  • Valid Florida driver’s license required, Class “B” CDL.


Supervisory Responsibilities:
Occasionally may be asked to oversee the activities of Sanitation Worker I personnel.
