POSITION SUMMARY: This position performs general accounting and financial work preparing journal entries, accruals, and adjustments. Responsible for maintaining City accounting records for all fund types, ensuring compliance with regulations. Prepares cash reconciliations and financial reports, assists with budget development and oversight, assists with preparation for annual audit, working with auditors to minimize audit time and expense.
JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Analyzes, prepares and post journal entries and oversee general ledger activity
- Examine and analyze budget to maintain expenditure controls.
- Maintain chart of accounts
- Analyzes and verifies end of period journal entries in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles and department requirements
- Ensures all financial records are accurate and in compliance with policies and procedures, and relevant accounting standards including GAAP and GASB.
- Prepares various internal and external financial reports
- Reviews trial balances and balance sheets
- Assists in the development of annual budgets and forecasts; monitor budget performance and reports on budget variances
- Responsible for fixed asset accounting, depreciation schedules and adherence to capital asset policy
- Prepares various worksheets and schedules as needed for independent auditors.
- Special Projects: may participate in special projects, such as system implementations, process improvements and financial analysis initiatives.
- Provides back-up support for the payroll and accounts payable functions.
- Other duties as assigned by the Comptroller
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
EDUCATION: Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required
EXPERIENCE: Accounting experience or Governmental Accounting preferred
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Excel
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
- Ability to work effectively with staff, elected officials, and external auditors
- Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines
- Ability to organize and prioritize work
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
None, but may direct departmental clerks on procedures and application system use
EQUIPMENT TO BE USED:
Computer, fax machine, telephone, 10-key calculator, printer, and general office equipment
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Standing, sitting, kneeling, stooping, lift maximum of 25 pounds.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Works in a typical office setting. Expected to be consistently reliable and punctual for scheduled work.
Salary : $65,000 - $75,000
