POSITIONThe Environmental Health Specialist/Sanitarian performs diversified technical environmental health duties under the direction of the Public Health Administrator and / or their designee.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
ESSENTIAL DUTIESConduct routine inspections of facilities, such as schools, restaurants, retail food establishments, hotel/motels, public swimming facilities, tattoo and body art facilities, temporary restaurants, mobile food trucks, pet shops, massage parlors, rooming houses, backyard chickens, and vending machines as regulated by state and local ordinances.Review new construction, remodeling plans, and blueprints for permitted establishments regulated by local and state health ordinances.Conduct investigations and risk assessments in response to lead poisoned children.Inspect and investigate dwellings to correct or abate human health hazards or public nuisances.Investigate citizen complaints, answer inquiries, and provide education supporting local and state environmental health ordinances.Interact with epidemiological event responses, including foodborne illness outbreaks, to determine causes and corrective actions.Investigate unlicensed/illegal business operations.Investigate animal bites and issue appropriate orders / warnings / citations for licensing violations and vaccination statutes.Collect appropriate environmental samples for testing, such as water, ice, food, paint chips, and dust.Package rabies specimens for shipment and testing.Write orders / referrals and Municipal Court citations / fines, and summons / complaints for violations of local and state ordinances.Provide testimony in court and administrative meetings regarding environmental health violations.Teach safe food handling techniques in a small classroom setting.Maintain HEPA vacuum rental service.Provide input at case management encounters, departmental meetings, conferences, evaluations, planning committees, and outreach activities.Complete activity / inspection / reports and enter into appropriate databases.Participate in peer review activities and evaluation of program effectiveness.Attend training sessions and meetings to maintain current knowledge of community, environmental, and public health related issues and policies.Environmental Health Specialist/Sanitarian 01/07/2025 Page 2 of 3Assumes responsibility for own professional growth and development and contributes to a work environment where continual improvements in practice are pursued.Maintain a consistent and reliable attendance record.ASSOCIATED DUTIESPerform other duties as assigned or required.Participate in team and general staff meetings.Acts as a first responder in a natural disaster or any public health, chemical, biological, nuclear, or radiological event.
