We are seeking a dedicated Environmental Health Specialist to work full time (35 hours per week) Monday through Friday in our Food and Recreation program. This is an impactful role for professionals committed to enhancing public health through inspections, environmental hazard management, and proactive community engagement.

The Environmental Health Specialist works in our community to ensure safe and healthy environments, with a focus on food safety, recreational facilities, and school health inspections. EHS-ITs (Environmental Health Specialists In-Training) will work under supervision, progressively moving to independent work as a REHS (Registered Environmental Health Specialist) within two years. REHS roles perform independent inspections, manage compliance, and contribute to public health initiatives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Licenses and inspects food service operations, retail food establishments, public pools, spas, beaches, and campgrounds to ensure compliance with state codes and the Summit County Environmental Health Code (EHC).
  • Conducts plan reviews, operator education, and investigates foodborne illness complaints.
  • Performs water sampling, legionella assessments, and tests for recreational facilities.
  • Inspects public and private schools for health and safety issues, providing detailed written reports to facilities.
  • Addresses complaints related to food safety and recreation, conducting inspections and responding to complainants as needed.
  • Investigates and resolves environmental health issues in alignment with public health standards and regulations.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree with a minimum of 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours in the sciences; Valid EHS-IT or REHS credential per Ohio Department of Health requirements.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google products, and technical applications relevant to environmental health.
  • Valid Ohio driver's license, automobile availability, and insurance coverage.
