Direct service is provided to consumers in the Villages of Sturtevant, Mt. Pleasant, Elmwood Park and North Bay. Direct Service includes delivery of pure drinking water, excellent fire protection, repairs and maintenance of the water system, and constant testing to assure potability. The current service area includes all of Racine County east of I-94.

- Installs, maintains, inspects, and repairs pumps, pipes, gauges, meters, valves and plumbing.
- Installs, maintains, inspects, and repairs chemical feed systems, pumps, injectors, and piping.
- Installs, maintains, inspects, and repairs the HVAC system, including heating system valves, radiators, and plumbing.
- Dismantles machinery or equipment to access defective parts, and repairs or replaces using various hand tools.
- Maintains and repairs small gasoline engines and related power equipment.
- Follows equipment O&M manuals for proper intervals of preventative maintenance, and maintains accurate O&M repair records and reports.
- Verifies delivery manifests and unloads and stores supply shipments; notifies supervisor when inventory supplies require restocking.
- Performs grounds maintenance, including snowplowing, grass cutting, and landscaping.
- Performs custodial duties on equipment and buildings, and maintains clean and orderly equipment storage areas, locker facilities, and vehicles.
- Assists electrician in installing, maintaining, or replacing electrical equipment and apparatus.
- Checks plant boiler systems for proper operation and water levels, and maintains as necessary.
- Maintains generator plant for preparedness during emergency events and non-emergency testing.
- Works cooperatively with other Utility departments and staff to respond appropriately to emergency situations, or assist on projects in the plant or distribution system.
- Adheres to all safety procedures as defined by the Utility work and safety rules.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
- Ability to work under moderately safe and comfortable conditions where exposure to environmental factors such as toxic agents and machinery poses a slight risk of injury; exposure to water treatment chemicals, noise, odor, welding fumes, step climbing, trip hazards, and large water basins with fall risk; exposed to outdoor climatic conditions.
- Minimum training and experience required to perform essential job functions.
- Possession of high school diploma or GED equivalent, and at least 18 years of age.
- A minimum of a full 2 years prior professional mechanical experience working with pumps, compressors, blowers, or engines; or a combination of equivalent experience and related education that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- City of Racine Facilities Engineer license is required within 1 year of hire.
- Valid state-issued motor vehicle operator’s license is required.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Wisconsin DNR Waterworks Operator Surface Water license certification is a plus.
- Mechanical training and certification in electro-mechanical technology, HVAC, automotive maintenance, pipefitting, or plumbing is preferred.
- Proficiency with computer applications is a plus; including desired knowledge of programmable logic controllers.
ADDITIONAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Strong mechanical skills, including a working knowledge of electro-mechanical functions, principles and techniques, verifiable by past work experience.
- Skill in analyzing, diagnosing, correcting mechanical failures and defects.
- Skill in using specialized tools and equipment common to maintenance functions.
Advancement from the Maintenance I to Maintenance II tier level.
- Three years satisfactory performance as a maintenance dept worker.
- Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Waterworks Surface Water license.
- ASOPE and City of Racine Facilities Engineer license.
Advancement from the Maintenance II to Maintenance III tier level.
- Six years satisfactory performance as a maintenance dept worker.
- Association of Boards of Certification (ABC) Plant Maint. Tech Class I certification.
Advancement from the Maintenance III to Maintenance IIII tier level.
- Nine years satisfactory performance as a maintenance dept. worker.
- Maintenance 3 qualifications.

- Must have good dexterity with ability to hand operate tools and instruments, some requiring complex and rapid adjustments in coordination with eye movement.
- Ability to exert strenuous physical effort to lift and carry objects up to 80 lbs., typically involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, turning/torqueing valves and apparatus, climbing steps and ladders, and extensive walking.
- Must be able to enter and work in confined spaces.
- Must be able and comfortable to work at heights.
- Ability to recognize and identify degrees of similarity or difference between characteristics of color, sound, and odor.
