Join our team as a part-time Deputy Fire Marshal, inspecting buildings and equipment to detect fire hazards and enforce local ordinances and state laws.
- Explains and interprets provisions of fire codes to building owners, managers, and employers
- Issues summons for fire hazards not corrected on subsequent inspections and enforce code when responsible party fail to cooperate
- Provides educational training related to fire and life safety procedures and practices
- Determines compliance and issues operational permits
- Maintains familiarity with both city of Raleigh and Raleigh Fire Department operations, including inspection software platform), inspection territory, Office of Fire Marshal staff, and our business owners

High school diploma (or GED) and three (3) years of directly related experience and certified technical training in fire protection and prevention
OR
An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.
Licensing and Certifications:
- Valid North Carolina Class C Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire
- Possess a minimum of a probationary Fire Inspector Level II or higher certification issued through the Office of State Fire Marshal Code Officials Qualification Board (Please note that this position will be required to maintain a current Fire Inspector Level III certificate)
- Gathering data, analyzing findings, and applying logic and reason
- Organizing tasks, meeting deadlines, and prioritizing competing demands
- Providing attention to detail in assignments
- Comprehending reference books and manuals
- Interpreting and applying applicable laws, codes, regulations, and standards
- Providing customer service
- Utilizing a computer and relevant software applications
- Utilizing communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisors, the public and others to sufficiently exchange or convey information and to receive work direction
ADA and Other Requirements:
Positions in this class typically require: stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.
Medium Work:
Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and / or up to 20 pounds of force frequently and / or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Working Conditions:
Work is performed in both the field and in an indoor office environment with moderate exposure to hazardous physical conditions (such as mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibration, etc.); frequent exposure to atmospheric conditions (such as fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, etc.); moderate exposure to environmental conditions (such as disruptive people, imminent danger, or a threatening environment); moderate exposure to extreme temperatures, intense noise and travel; and frequent exposure to inadequate lighting and movement restrictions.
