The City of Raleigh Public Utilities Department, now also known as Raleigh Water, provides water and sanitary sewer services to about 198,000 metered customers and a service population of about 600,000 people in Raleigh, Garner, Wake Forest, Rolesville, Knightdale, Wendell, and Zebulon areas. Utilities Technicians are devoted to completing preventive maintenance, utility repairs, utility locating, participating in investigations within our water system and providing excellent customer service. The Valve Utility Technician also performs maintenance and equipment operation for the City’s distribution system by performing skilled activities in support of maintaining, replacing, and repairing water assets (i.e., services, mains, and fire hydrants, and so forth).The benefits of being a Raleigh Water Utilities Technician: Qualifying Utilities Technician are eligible for training certifications that provide stipends of additional 12.5% to base payEducation provided to learn Water Operator standards and earn certificationsGet your CDL! Identifies valves needing repairs and performs water valve preventive maintenanceAssists with the annual flushing program to ensure water quality standardsPerforms semi-skilled or skilled general maintenance with proper maintenance tools and equipment in accordance with established safety policies, procedures, applicable codes, and regulationsCollects, prepares, and enters system data. Creates work orders; logs work activities, updates maps, enters account data, compiles and prepares reports, and maintains records, files, and work-related documentationOperates valve maintenance equipment including valve trucks, hydraulic valve turners, ERV’s, handheld equipment, fabricationAssists with other investigative, hydrant, and repair programs as neededNote: This job classification description is intended to be generic in nature.
