The City of Raleigh Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department is seeking candidates that have a passion for providing exceptional customer service and a commitment to serving others. The advertised position will support the activities and services at Pullen Arts Center.
The recently expanded and renovated Center features four professionally equipped studios: a bookmaking & printmaking studio, a metals studio, a painting studio, and a pottery studio. The studios are complemented by separate youth, pottery, and multi-purpose classrooms. These spaces are used for preschool, youth, teen, and adult programs that the center offers. Additionally, Pullen has dedicated gallery spaces for exhibiting local emerging artists, and youth/teen artists.
The Custodian would be responsible for cleaning Pullen Arts Center and adjacent outdoor restroom as well as assisting with the cleanliness of the outdoor spaces.
Typical schedule for this type of position is Monday-Friday, 6am-2pm but can be adjusted based on facility needs and may involve periodic evening or Saturday hours.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Perform cleaning and custodial duties for assigned park and facility, including entry, offices, classrooms, studios, galleries, restrooms, kitchens, hallways and all work areas. This includes but is not limited to mopping, vacuuming, dusting, sweeping, cleaning restrooms, cleaning windows, touch-up painting, laundry, unloading clay, and emptying trash and recycling. The studios require specific cleaning measures that will be covered in training upon hire. Possibly serve as a backup custodian for Sertoma Arts Center
- Assist in maintaining outside appearance of grounds for assigned building. This could include blowing, sweeping, dusting, emptying trash cans, picking up trash and shoveling snow if necessary
- Set up assigned building as needed for programs and events
- Maintain custodial inventory for assigned building, submitting orders for supplies based on inventory on a monthly basis. Manage inventory within assigned custodial supply budget
- Maintain floors by buffing, scrubbing, stripping, sealing and/or waxing floors on a regular basis if necessary; May be requested to assist with floors at other facilities; Requires experience with and knowledge of standard floor machines
- Maintain custodial equipment located at assigned building
- The position requires the ability to meet the physical demands of maintaining the buildings and grounds and will require the ability to work both indoors and outdoors
Typical Qualifications
Education and Experience:
High School Diploma or GED and at least one year of relevant experience in custodial work is required
OR
An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.
Licensing and Certifications:
Valid North Carolina Class C Driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire

Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Working Conditions:
Work is performed in both the field and in an indoor office environment with moderate exposure to atmospheric conditions (such as fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, etc.); moderate exposure to environmental conditions (such as disruptive people, imminent danger, or a threatening environment); and frequent exposure to intense noise.
