About the Position:
The Water Treatment Plant Operator performs a variety of operational, and process lab work used for monitoring the treatment process for safe drinking water. This employee also monitors all equipment at the plant and remote sites and must have the ability to make necessary process adjustments when water quality changes occur. Employees in this role are essential front-line staff, ensuring safe drinking water. Work includes monitoring all tank levels and operating pump stations in 6 merger towns as well as the City of Raleigh.
Work Hours and Location:
This position will be primarily located at: E. M. Johnson Water Treatment Plant. Operators may be temporarily assigned to other plants based on staffing levels. The primary work hours will be on a permanent night shift from 7:00 pm - 7:30 am, with occasional after hour emergency support required, such as during inclement weather events.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Performs visual, olfactory, and auditory checks of assigned areas of the treatment plant to detect any failures of equipment and electronics
- Monitors and validates Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) information, including chemical feeds, filter rates, reservoir levels and filter parameters. Operates and makes equipment adjustments as needed
- Performs facility equipment inspections such as monitoring distribution tank levels, responding to plant equipment alarms, and determining required corrective actions. Completes repairs and/or notifies appropriate maintenance personnel, leader, or supervisor of critical issues
- Performs, collects and/or reports sampling and laboratory analysis for process control and/or compliance reporting. Monitors chemical levels within established parameters and verifies data accuracy and reliability
- Receives and responds to briefings related to current plant status, safety, training and daily operating instructions. Reviews SCADA status and performs assigned operational and routine maintenance tasks
- Completes daily record-keeping and data entry. Enters and maintains data in laboratory information management system, such as daily logs and assignment-related documentation
- Receives and monitors chemical deliveries and required tank capacity and maintains appropriate storage of chemicals and supplies
- Performs routine grounds maintenance and general maintenance of work areas. As needed, hauls, dumps, and loads residuals
- Attends team meetings and safety training
Typical Qualifications
Education and Experience:
High School Diploma or GED and three years of maintenance experience
OR
An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.
Licensing and Certifications:

Certification for water/wastewater operators consistent with North Carolina law:
- NC Grade C Surface Certification, or the ability to obtain within 2 years of hire
- Required to provide copy of High School Diploma or GED to the certification board while obtaining C-Surface
- Valid North Carolina Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain one within 60 days of hire
