What are the responsibilities and job description for the Library Assistant position at City of Ralston?
PURPOSE OF POSITION: You will be responsible for coordinating, planning, and executing programming that is educational, entertaining, and enriching for our patrons. The relationships you cultivate in our community will allow valuable insight into the needs of our patrons, along with program connections. Under the general direction of the Library Director, you will check in/out library material, create library cards, monitor our self-checkout, and collect fines and fees at the public service desk. You also need to be able to help patrons with all manner of technology, including computers, printers, tablets, and cell phones, to utilize the library’s myriad services and materials. Essential Functions:
· Plan and execute programs, presentations, workshops, and participatory experiences for our patrons.
· Perform circulation functions, including checking in and out library materials, renewing library materials, processing reserve materials, and collecting fines and fees.
· Assist patrons and answer questions regarding computer, catalog, fax, copier, and other library equipment operations.
· Engage in outreach opportunities for all members of the community.
· Performs other duties as assigned.
ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
· Knowledge of the principles and techniques associated with library work.
· Knowledge of library classification system, circulation and reference methods.
· Knowledge of community resources and agencies available to the general public.
· Ability to read and interpret documents such as library policies, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
· Ability to work effectively with various children, youth and adults of different ethnicities, socio-economic backgrounds, learning and physical abilities, behaviors and other differences.
· Ability to maintain the confidentiality of appropriate communications, documents, and transactions.
· Ability to accurately prepare and maintain various records, reports and other departmental documents.
· Ability to use independent judgment in the performance of duties.
· Ability to perform job duties efficiently while managing frequent interruptions.
· Ability to understand and follow both oral and written instructions.
· Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.
ESSENTIAL EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION AND/OR LICENSES:
1. Graduation from high school or GED equivalent, with higher education preferred.
2. One year of experience in libraries, education, customer service or event planning.

Work is generally performed indoors in an office setting and requires routine bending, lifting and carrying office supplies, library books and other materials. The incumbent is required to frequently sit for extended periods, talk, hear and must be able to transport themselves to and from various locations within the city library. Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate computers and various other pieces of equipment.
While performing the duties, the incumbent must use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls and to reach with hands and arms. Vision abilities required include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. The noise level is usually moderate.
Work requires interaction with the general public and may be stressful when dealing with irate citizens and/or meeting deadlines.

Pay: $17.00 - $18.00 per hour
Expected hours: No more than 25 per week
