To perform a variety of non-sworn law enforcement support duties for the Ramsey Police Department. This position provides cost-effective public safety and superior customer service while performing regularly scheduled community service work. It also assists with high priority unanticipated calls for service, and with public protection and crime prevention.

This is a 25-hour per week AFSCME union, uniformed, non-sworn paid and benefit eligible internship. The position is covered by Public Employees Retirement Association (PERA) and ancillary benefits are available. The position does not include health, dental and life insurance benefits.
This position offers pro-rated vacation, EEST/sick and holiday pay, which begins on day one!
The 2025 Salary Range is: Step 1 - $23.743 -- Step 2 $24.930 -- Step 3 $26.118 -- Step 4 $27.305 -- Step 5 $28.492 -- Step 6 $29.679/hour. A combination of training and experience substantially equivalent to the following:

- Must have a high school diploma or equivalent (GED)
- Must be currently enrolled in a law enforcement program as a student and able to provide evidence of law enforcement school enrollment
- If selected, provide evidence of schooling throughout employment in this role, which is limited to no more than five years, or one-year POST eligibility, whichever comes first
- Must possess a valid Minnesota driver’s license in good standing
- Must be certified in First Aid and C.P.R. or able to acquire certification within six months of hire
- Must have basic to intermediate Microsoft Office knowledge and skills
- Must have the ability to provide excellent customer service
- Must pass a criminal history check and driver’s license check
- Have formal training in traffic and pedestrian control
- Experience/training in observation and recollection of events
- Experience/training in law enforcement or security
- Experience/training in dealing with animals
- One year or more of public contact or customer service experience
- Assist police officers at the scene of accidents with traffic control
- Assist in towing situations
- Assist with traffic and radar surveys
- Respond to non-emergency calls for service as assigned by Central Communications
- Receive and investigate ordinance complaints and document findings
- Enforce parking ordinances
- Perform animal control duties, including picking up stray animals and delivering them to the appropriate shelter
- Issue citations for animal ordinance violations and handle dog follow-up procedures and related records
- Receive and transmit messages over police dispatching radio
- Deliver police vehicles for maintenance and washing
- Assist with Fleet Maintenance
- Deliver and pick up correspondence
- Provide escorts
- Provide general support services to Police Officers
- Perform administrative errands
- Perform code enforcement activities
- Assist with crime prevention
- Provide evidence of continual law enforcement school enrollment; this is a requirement of the position
- Understand and appreciate the role, responsibilities and limitations of non-sworn personnel in the delivery of police services
- Follow oral and written instructions such as supervisor’s work orders and equipment operation manuals
- Maintain regular and reliable attendance during scheduled work hours and outside regular hours as necessary
- Provide effective and respectful communication and interactions with other employees, supervisors, individuals from other organizations and citizen customers
- Maintain positive professional working relationships with all staff levels, other jurisdictions and outside agencies and the general public
- Perform other duties as apparent or assigned (within the ability and resources of the Community Service Officer) at the verbal or written direction of the Chief of Police, Police Captains, Police Sergeants, Police Office Supervisor, Community Resources Officers or their designee
- Knowledge of principles, procedures, techniques and equipment of law enforcement
- Knowledge of animal restraint and care techniques
- Knowledge and ability to use computers including word processing and spreadsheets
- Skills to cope with situations firmly, courteously, tactfully and with respect to citizens' rights – even under stressful conditions
- Skills in the preparation of accurate and thorough reports
- Ability to effectively communicate in English, both orally and in written form
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships with all staff levels, residents and personnel from other agencies
- Ability to maintain confidentiality, prioritize duties and work independently with limited supervision
- Ability to act in a decisive manner, using good judgment
- Ability to maintain certification as a First Responder or in First Aid
- Ability to maintain regular attendance at work
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
