Position Details:
 Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Protects life by:
  • Responding to calls for service and emergency assistance; 
  • Rendering aid to the physically injured, handicapped, and others requiring assistance, including but not limited to victims of accidents, criminal incidents, natural disasters, or other incidents
  • investigating safety hazards and taking action to correct potential problem areas, including road hazards, defects, and environmental hazards.
Preserves peace by:
  • Responding to calls for assistance involving altercations between people, including but not limited to domestic disturbances, fighting, and neighborhood disputes, performing crowd and traffic control; enforcing state and city ordinances relating to keeping the peace; 
  • Providing motorized, foot, and bicycle patrol to residential and business areas to maintain community relations; practicing problem-solving techniques in support of the department's demographic policing, community policing, and problem-solving strategies.
  • Investigates violations of state laws/city ordinances and arrests violators using a degree of force necessary with state law and department policy.  
  • Enforces traffic laws to curtail violations.
  • Secures crime scenes to identify and collect any physical evidence present, and obtains descriptions of suspects/vehicles involved in crimes or criminal activity.
  • Prepares incident/accident reports, affidavits, citations, legal documents, memorandums, and other job-related documents and prepares for court testimony.
  • Operates police vehicles in routine and emergency situations.
  • Participates in job-related training and courses to maintain skills, knowledge, and abilities necessary to perform duties.
Additional Information:
This application period is for our July 7th 2025 hiring class. This hiring class will participate in the August 2025 LET Academy in Pierre, SD. 

Applications will close April 13th, 2024. Please be aware that entrance exams will take place April 1st through April 18th, if qualified to move forward you will receive an email with available testing dates. The Fitness test will take place between April 14th and the 20th, once you have passed the entrance exam you will receive additional communication on specific dates and times. Interviews are to be held the final week of April.

ABOUT YOU

The Rapid City Police Department is currently accepting applications for the 2025 police officer testing process.  Candidates must be at least 21 years of age, a US Citizen, possess a valid driver's license, and have not been convicted of a felony crime or serious misdemeanor offense.  To be eligible to test, applicants must possess one of the following minimum requirements:

 
  • Associate's degree or a minimum of 64 hours of college credit from an accredited institution; or
  • Four years of active duty, national guard, or reserve military service/experience; or
  • In the past two years you have graduated from a technical school which has a law enforcement reciprocity agreement within the state of South Dakota. 
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be acceptable.
There will be multiple opportunities to test with the Rapid City Police Department, both in person and in an online format.  Candidates who qualify will be notified with more information.
